The automobile industry has devoted considerable effort to increasing the thermal efficiency of gasoline engines. Extensive research and development efforts have been concentrated on establishing the combustion concept of Spark-ignited direct injection engine for the past fifty years.<br/> Recently, both growing attention towards energy saving and rapid progress in micro-computers and sensor technologies have aroused the intereets in SDI systems.<br/> In this paper, a newly developing KIA SDI engine is introduced. This SDI engine solved the problems in the past SDI engine with new technologies such as tumble port, piston with spherical cavity, high pressure fuel injection system. Further description is given about combustion characteristics, tuel economy and exhaust emission performance.<br/>

Fuel injected directly in cylinder in Gasoline Direct Injection engine is changed partly to particulate. It mast be reduced to meet the regulation of particulate number in EURO 6. Particulate is created in diffusion flame of wall wetting piston and combustion chamber roof, fuel deposits around injector tip, residual fuel droplets during combustion and also in the inhomogeneous gas phase around local rich area and the stored fuel in fire land. PN level can be reduced by the optimization of mapping parameter, the increase of injection pressure, multiple injection and laser drilled injection hole in injector. Also, MPI injectors are installed in ports together with GDI injectors and are used in the area that emits a lot of particulate instead of or together with GDI injectors. The source and emission level of particulate in GDI engine is investigated and the methods for reducing particulate are investigated in the paper.

Nowadays, Gasoline Direct Injection engines are being commercialized by virtue of improvement in control technic of spray, flow, air fuel ratio, GDI engines are classified into homogeneous and stratified charge type. The stratified charge type has the advantage of improving lean limit, and thus fuel economy. The homogeneous type has the advantage of reducing engine out hydrocarbon emissions in the first 30 seconds of operation after a cold start, in addition, improving transient air fuel ratio control throughou~ any drive cycle to maintain and improve upon current catalyst conversion efficiencies. The vaporization and mixing with air of injected fuel in direct injection has to be done in a short time and the fuel film in cylinder and piston has to be minimized. So, the flow and injection have to be well controlled. This paper surveyed the spray and combustion characteristic of Gasoline Direct Injection by using laser equipment and experimenting the single cylinder GDI engine of homogeneous type.<br/>
