『에코 메이커』의 카프그라 증후군: 자아와 의식의 외연을 넘기

        유제분 ( Jebun Yu ) 한국현대영미소설학회 2016 현대영미소설 Vol.23 No.2

Categorizing Richard Powers` The Echo Maker as a neuro novel, this study examines how the novel delves into issues of ``self``, ``consciousness``, and ecosystem through its literary use of Capgras syndrome and thus consequently extends the neuro novel genre. The novel, implicating human self and consciousness as constructed ideas chosen and formed in the process of evolution, questions the idea of a static self and consciousness within the humanist tradition. The major character, Mark Schluter, diagnosed with Capgras syndrome, relies on self-fantasy to maintain his idea of his own integrity. As the novel develops, the depiction of Capgras syndrome goes beyond the personal realm and becomes a social issue. Powers uses Capgras syndrome as a signifier to raise questions of the normality of people considered to be neuro-typical.. The novel also contends that humans share basically the same neuron circuitry as ecosystem like the wild sandhill cranes. Thus, through active change and understanding of self as a part of evolution, humans can extend themselves into the ecosystem. In this way, the novel extends the existing neuro novel genre by raising the question of the external extension of human self and connecting it to ecosystem.

대학생의 영작문에 나타난 시제와 가정법 사용 오류에 관한 연구

        정혜선(Jung Hyesun),양병곤(Yang Byunggon),유제분(Yu Jebun) 팬코리아영어교육학회(구 영남영어교육학회) 2005 영어교육연구 Vol.17 No.3

This study aims to examine errors in college students’ English compositions, focusing on the use of tense and subjunctive in order to provide teachers or text developers with basic materials of teaching grammar and writing. Thirty students participated in both the controlled and the free writing sessions in which students translated 32 Korean sentences into English and described their activities in the past, present, and future forms of tense. In addition, they filled out a questionnaire about their attitude toward English writing and knowledge on tense and subjunctive. The authors counted the number of correct expressions of tense and subjunctive in their writings to determine each subject’s score and two native speakers graded each writing by the TWE (TOEFL) standards. Results showed that in the controlled writing the students used 44.07% of tense and subjunctive forms correctly. The majority of the errors were attributed to the intralingual ones. In the free writing, the accuracy rate was higher, 90.92%, which might be related to the students’ avoidance of uncertain expressions. The students showed a strong interest in English but lacked confidence in their writing. Further studies on the students’ writing would be desirable.
