In automobile industry, it is necessary to reduce the weight from the view point of energy and environmental problems in these days. One of the ways for weight reduction is the use of the adhesive aluminum structure. In this study we investigate the influence of lap length, adherend thickness and adhesive thickness on tensile strength of single lap adhesive joint by conducting tensile-shear tests. According to the BEM analysis, the adhesive strength could be evaluated by the stress singularity factor.

In the present work, we conducted static tensile test to examine the influence of void size and void location upon the adhesive strength of single lap joints with voids in the adhesive layer. Larger void length or nearer void location from the ends of the overlap decrease the ultimate tensile load. AQ finite element analysis results was proposed to estimate the interface stress at the edge of void. The strength of adhesive joint with a void was well characterized by the shear stress at the edge of void.<br/>

To investigate the applicability of the structural adhesive to the automobile body, the stress and stress singularity analysis for T type bonded joint are carried out. Various factors such as the adherend thickness, bonded thickness and bonded length which affect on the stress singularity parameters are studied. We concluded that stress singularity factors decreases with increasing bonded thickness or bonded length.<br/> <br/>

The present study aims to evaluate fatigue damage and detect delamination of single lap tension-shear test specimen by utrasonic method. This study used AI 6061-T6 for test It detected delamination begining point and delamination point from tension-shear test and fatigue test, and evaluated fatigue damage by comparing fatigue life curve of fracture base with fatigue life curve of delamination base.<br/>

Currently it is increasing to use th bonded dissimilar materials in the various field of advanced engineering such as the highly rigid and lighter vehicle, plastic molding LSI package and metal/ceramic bonded joint. In spite of such a wide application of the bonded dissimilar materials, the evaluation method of the bonding strength has not been established yet. Therefore in this paper we analyze the interface crack problem by introducing fracture mechanics parameters as the basic research about estimating of the strength of adhesive joints. The variation of stress intensity factor according to the elastic modulus of adherend and thickness of bonded layer are investigated. Numerical results are based on the results of boundary element analysis of four different type butt joints subjected to uniaxial tension loading.

Adhesive bonded joints are being used in many structures in view of weight reduction. Therefore it is important to evaluate the bonding strength and the stress singularity at the interface edge. In this paper the boundary element results for the single lap joints having different thickness of adherend are presented. On the basis of this results the effects of the bonding length and adherend thickness on the joint strength are estimated by using the stress singularity parameters.<br/>
