2021 AURA Vol.0 No.46

This study observes the vertical perspective methods in urban architectural photography and takes Hong Kong building images as an example to explore the rendering method and effect based on the theory "Gestalt Laws of Organization" of Gestalt psychology. In the observation of building images with a vertical perspective, the authors first group the subjects by the shooting perspectives (a vertical front view or a vertical upward view), then, based on the Gestalt Laws of Organization, draw the conclusion about the role of shooting perspective in image composition as well as justifying the use of such perspectives in building images. The study shows, building images with a vertical front view are more flat, which feature will enhance the Equality of the forms of visual elements, and further take the advantages of the Gestalt Laws of Organization to connect these elements to realize an order-based coherence. While for building images with a vertical upward front view, the Law of Figure-ground is used as a major tool to define the visual hierarchy of the buildings and the sky, then create a perspective and gradient effect through the Law of Continuity and Law of Proximity to further improve the "three-dimensional rendering" and "spatial rendering". The study justifies the usage of vertical perspective in building photography, and the exploration and in-depth study of Gestalt Laws in building images could facilitate the understanding of connotations in the image composition.
