The effect of finger joint location and distance from joint to joint one another on 3 point mid-concentration bending strength properties was investigated in this experiment. Resorcinolphenol formaldehyde (RPF) and aqueous vinyl urethane (AVU) was used to domestic Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc and imported Picea sitchensis Carr. that have been cut to different width of 0.15 mm between finger tip and root width and the distance from loading point to finger joint was 0, 30, 40, 50, 60 mm. The effect was not found on the location and distance of finger joint for bending modulus of elasticity, while the efficiency of bending strength property increased proportionally as the location of finger joint from the load point and the distance between finger joint increased. No influence was shown by finger joint location and distance beyond 3 times of specimen thickness, since similar values were shown between the solid wood and no destruction occurred materials.

Since physical and mechanical properties of wood are affected by environmental factors such as soil and climate change, this study investigated relationships between wood quality factors and stand characteristics of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii forest in the southern region of Korea, including Jeollanam-do Province and Je-ju island. The obtained results found very close relationships between physical and mechanical properties of wood and stand characteristics. The air-dried density and strength performance of woods showed a negative correlation with the diameter at breast height (DBH) while they were positively related to altitude and drainage of the forest site. And wood properties showed variations depending on the region. These results brought a conclusion that wood of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii in the southern region could be useful forest resources for timber production.

Wood properties are affected by environmental factors such as soil and climate change. There were close relationships between mechanical properties and stand characteristics for Quercus serrata stands in Gyeongsangnam-doProvince, Jeollanam-do Province and Je-ju island. Both compression and shear strengths of woods showed a negative correlation with diameter at breast height (DBH) and the number of tree per hector, while they are positively related with with tree age, altitude, and drainage. The annual ring width was also negatively correlated with tree age, altitude, drainage, DBH, and tree height. However, anatomical characteristics of wood did not show much variation depending on the provincial regions. These results brought a conclusion that Quercus serrata in southern region could be usefulforest resources for the utilization of wood.

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique method using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for ceramicsmade by different carbonizing temperatures (600, 800, 1000, 1200℃) after impregnating the phenol resin with Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascen particle boards. Dynamic modulus of elasticity increased with increasing carbonizing temperature. There were a close relationship of dynamic modulus of elasticity and static bending modulus of elasticity to modulus of rupture (MOR). However, the result indicated that correlation coefficient was higher in dynamicmodulus of elasticity to MOR than that in static modulus of elasticity to MOR. Therefore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity using resonance frequency by free vibration mode is more useful as a nondestructive evaluation method for predicting the MOR of ceramics made by different carbonizing temperature for Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascensparticle boards.

Wood properties depend on not only environmental factors such as soil, climate change, or forest stand characteristics, but also silviculture practices such as thinning, regeneration, or selection. This study report influences of the extent of thinning intensity from no thinning, moderate and heavy thinning to the wood property of Quercus acuta forest stands in Wan-do arboretum, Jeollanam-do Province. The results showed that there were close relationships between thinning intensity and anatomical, physical or mechanical properties of Quercus acuta wood. Especially, there are close relationships between thinning intensity and ring width or mechanical properties of wood. As a result, this study showed high correlations between Quercus acuta wood properties and thinning intensity of Quercus acuta forest stand. These findings are expected to be very useful as fundamental data for the implementation of silviculture practices of this specie to produce timber.

Mechanical properties of woods are easily affected by the differences of site environment such as soil and climate changes. In this study, the relationship between mechanical properties and growth factors for Cryptomeria japonica stands in Jeollanam-do Province, Gyeongsangnam-do Province and Je-ju island was analyzed. From these plot data, bending strength, compressive strength, and shear strength were analyzed by Duncan’s new multiple range test. The results of Duncan’s new multiple range test analysis indicated that bending strength, compression strength, and shear strength were positively related to tree mean height, and stem number per ha, respectively, while they were inversely proportional to DBH (diameter at breast height), elevation, and soil drainage. As a result of this study, there are high correlations between mechanical properties of wood and stand characteristics of Cryptomeria japonica by the region, this findings are very useful to apply the silvicultural treatment system to produce high quality timber as a basic data on this species (distributed in southern region of Korea).

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plantation thinning on physical and mechanical properties of Larix kaempferi. Tree samples were obtained from unthinned, moderately, heavily thinned plantations where located in Kwangryung forest research stand. The effects of different thinning methods on the bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths of Larix kaempferi were explored. Average latewood ratio with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning < heavy thinning treatment. Average annual ring width with various thinning treatments showed the trend of unthinning < moderate thinning or heavy thinning treatment. Average bending and parallel to grain compressive strengths with various thinning treatments revealed the trend of unthinning > moderate thinning > heavy thinning treatment. This indicates that thinning treatment reduces average bending and parallel to grain compressive strength properties.

Wood properties are affected by environmental factors such as soil, topography, rainfall, and climate change. The physical and mechanical properties of Quercus glauca were analyzed in order to investigate the relationship between wood properties and forest stand characteristics related to regions and forest origins. Physical and mechanical properties of wood were influenced by region. And no significant difference was observed between natural and artificial forests with respect to wood quality properties. Therefore, these findings are expected to be useful as fundamental data for silviculture practices of these species for wood quality.

This study used pine wilt disease damaged trees as raw materials The damaged woods were subjected to soaking treatment using wood vinegar, nematicide and sea water, Fumigated treatment using fumigation, and the bending strength and hardness of the timber were measured at different points of time after the treatment. In soaking treatment, the highest bending strength was obtained from wood vinegar (100 fold dilution)-soaked specimens of Pinus densiflora and the nematicide-soaked specimens of Anus tbunbergii. The highest hardness in cross section was gained from the nematicide-soaked specimens of Pin us densiflora and Anus thunbergi4 the highest hardness in radial section was obtained from the nematicide-soaked specimens of Pin us densiflora and wood vinegar (100 Fold dilution)-soaked specimens of Anus thunbergi4 and the highest hardness in tangential section was obtained from the nematicide-soaked specimens of Antis densiflora and Pinus thunbergii and there were not significantly different among the treatments. When fumigated treatment was applied, bending strength, hardness was somewhat lower in the control but were not significantly different between the treatments.
