Misch metal (rare earth element, Ce, La, Nd, Pr) which has large influence on high-temperature stability and toughness was added to the Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy, and squeeze casting was used for Al-5%Ni-5%Mg-(Mm) alloys. The effect of applied pressure and misch metal additions on mechanical properties in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy by direct squeeze casting has been investigated. The applied pressure were 0㎫(gravity casting), 25, 50 and 75㎫. Squeeze-cast Al-5%Ni-5%Mg-(Mm) alloys had better mechanical properties than those of non-pressurized cast alloys because of the increased cooling rate by the application of pressure during solidification. By the addition of misch metal in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy, better combination of strength and elongation was obtained. The addition of 0.3%Mm in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy improved the heat resistant property due to the formation of fine eutectic phases.

Roles of fundamental and additional hardening precipitates on the changes of mechanical properties and electrical resistivity during precipitation decomposition in binary Al-Li, ternaty Al-Lieu and multi-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloys have been investigated by the detailed measurement of electrical resistivity, hardness and tensile strength and the observation of transmission electron micrographs. Peek hardness and tensile strength in multi-component Al-Lieu-Mg-Zr Alloy had higher than that of the other alloys and the results of measurement of hardness, strength and electrical resistivity in each alloys aged at 90 and 190℃ precipitation behaviors and mechanical properties in binary, ternary and multi component Al-Li alloys were contributed to the δ`, precursory phase of δ`, T₁, G.P.B. zone and S`phases, respectively.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt(VP shunt) for hydrocephalus is thought to inhibit the closure of processus vaginalis and promote inguinal hernia by increasing intraabdominal pressure. To estimate the patency rate of processus vaginalis and the incidence and characteristics of the inguinal hernia, 262 cases of VP shunt in early childhood between January 1980 and May 1998 at Seoul National University Children Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Inguinal hernia developed in 28 cases(10.7 %), but six patients had an inguinal hernia before the VP shunt was placed. Patients who had a VP shunt before 6 months of age developed inguinal hernia in 16.2 %(12/74) of cases, patients shunted between 6 months and 2 years had an incidence of 12.4 %(11/89) and only 5.1 %(5/99) of patients operated upon after 2 years of age developed hernias. Twenty-two patients out of 256 cases (8.6 %) developed inguinal hernia after VP shunt, with male predominance(M : F=4.5:1). Eight patients developed inguinal hernia bilaterally(36.4 %). It is suggested that at least 14% of processus vaginalis is patent until 2 years old.
