A prototype ion source for the KSTAR Neutral Beam (NB) heating system has a multi-cusp plasma chamber with a filament array to produce and maintain a large volume of a uniform and high-density plasma. The filament configuration proper to the structure of cusp magnetic fields is one of the most important factors governing the discharge characteristics of the plasma. The discharge performance of the KSTAR prototype ion source in a fixed-cusp field has been investigated experimentally for three different filament configurations: 1) 32 filaments with a TFTR layer; 2) 32 filaments in a uniformly distributed layer; and 3) 24 filaments in an electron-effective layer. The arc discharge efficiency, defined as the ratio of the ion density to the input arc power, and the plasma uniformity measured by 8 Langmuir probes distributed around the large beam extraction area are the key parameters in estimating the discharge performance of the ion source. The experimental results show that it is necessary to modify not only the filament configuration but also the structure of the cusp magnetic field in the bucket chamber to get a higher plasma efficiency in the source.

To develop into a good jounal, it takes constant and consistent time and the efforts. "Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association" has been tried and revised through workshop and research development subcommittec. As "an editor-in chief, I reviewed about the good journal evaluation principles especially four main aspects of the ISI journal selection process for Science Citation Index (SCI) and Index Medicus. These involve examination of basic journal publishing standards, editorial content, international diversity, and citation analysis. Aslo, I reviewed the important and problems of redundant publication and on-line publication. Through these current important issues, I suggests a Master plan for the Journal of Korean Neuropsychiathc Association.

A prototype KSTAR neutral beam (NB) system has been developed to test the long pulse operability of the KSTAR NB system for 300 seconds at the designed beam power. The prototype system consists of an ion source, beam line components, power supplies, water-cooling circuits, and a control & DAQ system. The ion source was designed to extract a 120 keV, 65 A deuterium beam with a rectangular beam size of 13 × 48 cm2. The beam line components include a neutralizer, a bending magnet, ion dumps, a calorimeter, and cryo-sorption pumps. An acceleration power supply, an arc power supply, a filament power supply, and a deceleration power supply provide the necessary powers in proper timings to the ion source. Data acquisition modules controlled by LabVIEW software acquire more than 200 data points from the thermocouples, flow meters, and others. The water cooling system can support experiments with a 2-MW continuous beam and can be extended to support experiments with an 8-MW beam for 300 seconds. The necessary tests of the prototype system have been done with high-power, long pulse beams.

A hexapole magnet for the Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source has been designed. The size of the outer diameter and the number of sectors of the hexapole were optimized with the help of a 3-dimensional field calculation code. Also to make a strong magnet with a long life against magnetic stresses on the hexapole, we designed a sector with a multi-layered structure, which had different magnetic materials, depending on the magnitudes of the magnetic stresses. The distributions of the stresses were estimated by calculating the radial field from the hexapole magnet and the axial field from the solenoid coils. ECR 이온원의 최적 자장구조를 만들어내기 위해서 필요한 영구자석형 6극자석 (Hexapole)을 설계하였다. 강력한 자장 구조를 만들어내기 위해 자석의 최적 외경과 섹타의 수를 3차원 자장계산 프로그램을 사용하여 결정하였으며, 6극자석 자체자장들의 영향에 의한 자기 스트레스 (magnetic stress)와 외부의 솔레노이드 자장에 의한 자기 스트레스를 평가하여 스트레스에 강하면서 필요한 자장 값을 충분히 가질 수 있도록 적절한 특성의 자석들을 가진 2층$-$3중겹 구조로 설계하였다. 2층$-$3중겹 구조를 사용한 영구자석형 6극자석은 내외부에서 작용하는 자기스트레스 속에서도 오랫동안 강력한 자장 값을 계속 유지할 수 있다.
