To reduce the damage by birds or meteorological disasters in pear orchards, trees were cultivated with net covering. This experiment determined the effects of netting on the tree growth and fruit quality. In addition, the influences on the incidence of disease and insects were determined. The wind decelerated as it passed the net, with its effect being greater in the net of smaller hole size. Netting significantly reduced fruit drop compared to control (11% vs 42% in 2mm net; 6% in 4~6mm net). Netting completely prevented damage by birds while no netting control showed that 15% damage of the total crop. Netting had no effect on the incidence of disease. However, netting with 2mm size reduced about 4% damage by the big insect such as carposinidae, especially in non-bagged trees. Light transmittance was reduced by netting especially with 2mm net, which resulted in decreases in the number of shoot and the rate of flower bud initiation. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the extent of light transmission and fruit characteristics.
