이 논문의 연구목적은 님 웨일즈의 아리랑 이 어떻게 동아시아를 대표하는 조선인 혁명가의 텍스트로 만들어지게 되었는가를 고찰하는 데 있다. 필자는 이와 같은 연구목적을 수행하기 위해 아리랑의 서술 대상이자 주체인 김산을 러시아의 대문호 톨스토이의 작품만이 아니라 유럽의 고전문학을 탐독하며 자신을 객관적으로 성찰한 근대적 독서인으로 간주하고 있다. 아리랑이 출간된 이래, 김산은 흔히 중국공산당과 협력하여 식민지조선의 해방을 열망한 조선인 혁명가로 해석되어 왔다. 그리고 김산이나 아리랑에 대한 기존의 연구는 대개 김산을 조선인 혁명가로 정의하며 진행되어 왔다. 그런데 아리랑은 김산의 이미지를 조선인 혁명가로 제한하지 않는 문제적인 장면을 적지 않게 남기고 있다. 그 문제적인 장면이 바로 독서하는 근대적 주체로서의 김산이다. 숭실학교 시절부터 톨스토이의 작품을 탐독한 김산은 1920년대, 30년대 격동하는 근대 중국에서 식민지조선 해방 투쟁에 전념하면서도 톨스토이의 인생독본 을 매사 탐독했다고 님 웨일즈에게 토로한다. 여기서 필자가 주목하는 대목은 김산의 독서가 혁명가로서 정체성에 도전 받거나 동지들에게 스파이로 의심을 받는 등 위기의 순간에 집중되었다는 데 있다. 이처럼 김산의 독서는 단지 근대적 취향의 차원에 머물지 않는다. 김산의 독서는 자신을 둘러싼 내적 외적 위기에 표류하지 않음은 물론 이념적 경계에 구속되지 않는 근대적 주체로 단련하는 동력으로 보인다. 무엇보다도 김산의 독서는 자신을 오로지 이념을 맹종하는 교조적인 혁명가로 머물지 않게 하는 내적 동력으로 활용된다. 그리고 김산의 독서는 자신은 물론 ‘물 속의 소금’처럼 사라진 식민지조선의 숱한 청년 혁명가들의 삶이 실패한 삶이 아니라고 선언하는 근거가 되기도 한다. 아리랑 은 중국공산당과 협력해 조국의 해방을 열망한 식민지조선 혁명가의 고백적인 증언서사이기도 하지만 문학으로 자신을 어떻게 단련했는가를 이야기하는 문학적 서사이기도 하다. 본고가 밝히고자 한 아리랑 의 문학적 성격이 바로 여기에 있다. The purpose of this study is to investigate how The Song of Ariran by Nym Wales is being made into a test by Korean revolutionary as representative of East Asia. To execute such research objective, this researcher considers Kim San who is subject and narrative identity of Song of Arirang as modern reader who meditates on her inner self by reading with avidity for the classical literature in Europe as well as works by Tolstoy, the literary giant of Russia. Since Song of Arirang was published, Kim San has been often interpreted as Korean revolutionary who aspired the colonial Chosun's liberation in cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party. In addition, the earlier study on Kim San or Song of Arirang would make progress with the definition of Kim San as Korean revolutionary. However, Song of Arirang contains the problematic scenes a lot not to limit the image of Kim San as Korean revolutionary. The problematic scene is Kim San to read as modern subject. Kim San who has avidly read Tolstoy’s works since his Soongsil school days spoke his mind to Nym Wales that he was always indulgent in reading Tolstoy’s final work as he was committed to the fight for colonial Chosun liberation in the modern China turbulent in 1920s and 1930s. In this study, this researcher’s something worthwhile to focus on is that Kim San’s reading is focused in times of crisis as revolutionary on being challenged to the identity or suspected of spy by his comrades. In this way, Kim San’s reading does not stay in dimension of modern taste. Kim San’s reading seems to be power to be trained as modern subject which is not bound to the ideological boundary as well as it is not drifted to the domestic and foreign crisis that surround him. Among other things, Kim San’s reading is utilized as inner power which does not stay with the doctrinaire revolutionary to follow ideology blindly. In addition, Kim San’s reading becomes a basis for declaring that a lot of youth revolutionaries’ lives in the colonial Chosun who disappeared like ‘Salt in Water’ including him are not failed. Song of Arirang is confessional narrative of testimony for the colonial Chosun revolutionary who aspired his fatherland liberation in cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party as well as literary narrative about the story how to train himself by using literature. That is why this study is to clarify the literary characteristic of Song of Arirang .

Asia is to be public attention as new territory of literature detected by the modern Korean novels. Since opening of port of Korea the modern Korean novels which had been defined as literature of national consciousness has been extended their boundary after being in contact with Asia freshly. This study discuss on how figure out Asia in recent modern Korean novels, especially written by Bak Beom Shin, Kim Jae Yung, Bang Hyun Seok, which is estimated to be excellent art. Their literatures describe Asia to be imaginary territory which consolates and saves Korean society being studded with modern violence such as racialism, chauvinism. The point of higher attention in arts of Bak Beom Shin, Kim Jae Yung is that Asia is to be defined to premodern holy territory to the contrary of Korean society being studded with modern violence. It, however, can arouse criticism like rehabilitation of orientalism. The arts Bang Hyun Seok describe Asia to be alternative territory to cure disease of modern violence of Korean society even though not to be holy territory. The arts of Bang Hyun Seok reiterate, also, rhetoric of orientalism that is Korean society as lack, and Asia as alternative. These lay-out will be task to be overcome in the modern Korean novels. 아시아는 최근 한국현대소설이 발견한 문학 영토로 주목받고 있다. 개항 이래, 자신의 문학적 정체성을 일국의 문학으로 정의하던 한국문학은 동시대의 아시아를 다각적으로 만나며 문학의 경계를 확장하고 있다. 이에 본고는 아시아를 재현한 최근의 한국현대소설 중에서 수작으로 평가받는 박범신, 김재영, 방현석의 작품을 중심으로 아시아가 어떻게 재현되는가의 문제를 논의하고 있다. 이들의 문학에서 아시아는 인종차별, 인권유린, 산업재해, 저임금, 육체노동 등의 근대적 폭력이 관철되는 한국사회를 반성시키고 구원하는 영토로 재현되고 있다. 더 주목해야 하는 점은 박범신, 김재영 문학에서의 아시아는 근대적 폭력의 한국사회와는 구분되는 전근대적 영토로 재현된다는 특징을 보여주는 바, 이는 오리엔탈리즘을 재구성하는 재현이라는 비판에서 자유롭지 않다. 방현석 문학은 아시아를 전근대적 영토로 재현하기보다는 윤리적 주체들이 근대의 상처와 후유증을 자체적으로 치유하는 대안적 근대의 영토로 재현하고 있다. 방현석 문학은 아시아를 근대와 분리되지 않은 대안적 근대의 영토로 재현하는 성과를 보여주고 있지만 그의 문학도 아시아를 결여의 한국과 대안의 아시아라는 수사학에 의지하면서 동시에 전도된 오리엔탈리즘에 기반해 서술된다는 점에서 일정한 한계를 내포하고 있다. 이제 한국현대소설은 아시아 재현의 성격과 수준을 새롭게 해야 하는 과제에 직면하고 있다.
