Effects of acupuncture at Sanyinjiao(SP6) and Yanglingquan(GB34) on bone mineral sensity(BMD) was investigated in ovariectomized(OVX) rats. BMD of OVX rats was measured left femur and tibia 2 and 4 weeks after acupuncture stimulation, respectively. Compared with sham-operated rats, a significant decrease in spine, pelvic and left femoral and tibial BMD was observed 2 and 4 weeks after OVX, respectively. In contrast, a significant increase of spinal, pelvic and left femoral and tibial BMD was elicited 2 and/or 4 weeks after acupuncture stimulation, respectively. These results show the possibility that acupuncture can play a role of ameliorating osteoporosis by elevating serum levels of female hormones related with bone metabolism.

The effect of water extract of antler on serum level of female hormones was investigated in ovariectemized rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were ovariectomized(ox). After a further 40 days the animals were administrated with water extract of antler (625mg/kg daily) for 10, 20 and 30 days, respectively. Serum level of estradiol, progesterone, leutenizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone were measured. Significant increase of serum estradiol level was elicited at 20 and 30 days after treatment with water extract of antler, respectively, Associated with the increase of serum estradiol level, there was a concomitant decrease in serum follicle stimulating hormone level. Serum progesterone level was also significantly increased at 30 days after treatment with water extract of antler. Although serum leutenizing hormone level of ox rats treated with water extract of anther was slightly lower than that of untreated ox rats, the decrease was not significant.

The effect of Cervi Cornu Parvum aqua-acupuncture on serum levels of sex hormone was investigated in ovariectomized rats. Water extract of Cervi Cornu Parvum was daily injected for 30 days at points in rats corresponding to bilateral Taixi (Ki. 3) points of human and non-point at root of tail after ovariectomy, respectively. Serum levels of estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, LH and FSH were measured at 2 and 4 weeks after aqua-acupuncture treatment, respectively. Compared with ovariectomized rats, significant increase of estradiol and progesterone and significant decrease of FSH and LH were elicited at 2 and 4 weeks after aqua-acupuncture treatment. Aqua-acupuncture treatment at non-point did not produce any remarkable effect. These findings suggest aqua-acupuncture may restore dysfunction of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, associated with a significant increase of serum estradiol level in ovariectomized rats.
고지방 식이 비만 모델 마우스의 체중 및 혈장 지질 대사에 미치는 한방보조식품의 영향

Objective : Recently, obesity has increased at an alarming rate and is now a worldwide health problem. Natural dietary supplement, $CharmSlim^{(R)}$(C), is mixed pills, which consists of beans, black sesames, kelps, onions, adlay seeds, anchovies, pyogo mushrooms, green tea. Our study was performed to determine the weight-loss effects of natural dietary supplement, based on natural ingredients, in mice fed high-fat diet with an abundance of carbohydrates. Methods : Four groups of male ICR mice were fed different diets during 6 weeks: normal diet(NOR), high-fat (15%, w/w) diet(HF), high-fat supplemented with natural dietary supplement powdered 5%(C5) and 10%(C10) groups. We measured the changes of food intake, body weight and adipose tissues weights. Also we examined levels of lipid profiles in serum. Results : Body weight, liver weight and food efficiency ratio were significantly higher in the HF group than in NOR group. After 6 weeks of treatment, body weight, liver weight and adipose tissues weights (epididymal, perinephric, visceral and BAT) were significantly decreased in the C10 group when compared to the control HF group. The C10 group had markedly lower serum levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride when compared with HF group. Conclusion : These results demonstrate that this dietary supplement can suppress the increased lipid profiles, body weight and fat gains, thus could be considered as an effective adjunct in the treatment of obesity.

The methanol extracts were prepared from 46 oriental medicines currently used for stroke treatment, and the effects were assessed on the excitotoxic neuronal cell death induced by L- glutamate(Glu) in primary cultured rat cortical neurons. The extracts from Angelicae gigantis Radix, Manitis Squama, Acori graminei Rhizoma, Uncariae RamWus et Uncus, Alpiniae Fructus, Paeoniae Radix, and Cnidii Rhizoma inhibited the Glu-induced neurotoxicity with the IC50 values of 95.2, 218.6, 263.3, 295.1, 297.9, 310.1, and 446.7mcg/ml, respectively. The extracts from Arisaematis Rhizoma, Loranthi Ramulus, Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Carthami Flos, Clematidis Radix, Bambusae Concretio Silicea, and Angelicae koreanae Radix also exhibited significant inhibition of the toxicity. In contrast, the extracts from Aconiti Tuber, Araliae cordatae Radix, Curcumae Rhizoma, Leonuri Herba, Polygalae Radix, Salviae Radix, and Siegesbeckiae Herba increased the Glu-induced toxicity at the concentrations of 500 and 1000mcg/ml. Rest of the extracts evaluated in the present study showed minor or negligible inhibition. Taken together, the oriental medicines including Angeficae gigantis Radix, Manitis Squama, Acori graminei Rhizoma, Uncariae Rwnulus et Uncus, and Alpiniae Fructus appear to exert pharmacological effects through the inhibition of excitotoxic neuronal cell death. Further studies are in progress to characterize active principles in these extracts.
