The iron oxide decoration, being a paint containing much oxide of iron, when applied both under or over glazing onto the patterns of the porcelain, results in the colors of dark or red browns. The initial utilization of the iron oxide decoration on the porcelain first appeared during the early stage of Koryo Dynasty in the 10th century which developed in various forms onto the porcelain till the latter part of the Yi Dynasty till 19th century with distictive features realized through these eras. A touch of the iron oxide on the porcelanous yielded unsophisticated, bold and plain in appoearences. This study probed, on the foundation of traditional craftmanship of iron oxide decoration porcelains, of its materials preparations followed by the fring which result in coloring and variations through the pilot experiments to produce methods of the iron oxide decoration applications on the contemporary porcelain production The methods so employed in this pilot project were the probing of the coloring in utilizations of Fe2O3 which contains major portions of iron oxide, iron ores, deep rested irons plus silica, porcelain clay, yellow ocher soil and kaolin which plays the major role by the previous and by the latters, to approach the coloring appearances by the preparations of proportions of the above elements, all which the superior colorings eventually applied onto the contemporary porcelain works on often and generally used on the Matt glazing and semitransparent glazings. Along these lines, expressions in the traces of brush, realistic designs, lines of both straight and curves whose feasibilities of untilizations of iron oxide decoration have been experimented. The experimental circumstances were that the white porcelain clay, glazes which is melted on the 1270 degrees in Centigrade, fired by both oxide friring and restoration firing. These experiments had revealed the following findinds: 1. When mixed in the propotion in the ration of 80 Fe2O3 and 20 yellow ocher soil on the test of white porcelain clay and transperent galze to go through restoration firing, the coloring showed close to red iron color. 2.The materials adequate to the iron oxide decoration were chemical kin of Fe2O3 natural iron ores and deep rested irons which contain of the principal elements of the iron oxid. 3. The supplementary materials such as silica, porcelain clay, yellow ocher soil and Kaolin affect almost similar result onto the iron oxide decoration coloring, the color is rather indistinct when iron oxide contatins less, deep tone brown when oxide firing applied, and red brown tone is formed when restoration firing applied. 4. Iron oxide decoration cloring shows, between Mattglaze and semi-transparent glaze, the former reveals good esquis, the latter the main drawing when oxide firing and the esquis when restoration firing implemented, all which revealed agreeble coloring and the degree of the melting. 5. In the case of oxide firing, the expressions in the traces of brush reveal a satisfactory result in transparent glaze and esquis, and the same were realistic designs, transparent glaze, esquis, and the Matt glaze, which all appeared to be superior when the oxide firing applied. The straight lines, the curved lines are superior on the transparent glaze, esquis are proper when both oxide and restoration firings applied and the Matt glaze, esquis , main drawing are proper when oxide firing applied. The above research is considered rather anfinished formulation in the iron oxide ujtilizations and it is hoped to be a helpful study towards the superior coloring of the iron oxide in the process so implemented by this study considering the complexion of the iron coloring thus far experimented to date.
