        The Effect of Resource Allocation on the Performance of an Organization: An Application to the Professional Basketball League

        This paper studies the effect of resource allocation on the performance of an organization. To this end, we propose a set of numerical measures that summarize the organization’s resources, including the total amount of resources and the distribution of resources across members of the organization. We investigate how the makeup of team rosters affect the performance of teams in the National Basketball Association. We found that the total amount of resources is the key determining factor of having a successful team. Moreover, the fixed amount of resources can result in drastically different outcomes depending on how those resources are allocated. Our counterfactual simulation shows that some teams can even double their wins simply by re-arranging their rosters.

        Reputation Effect, Business-stealing Effect, and Income Effect in Amazon’s Co-purchasing Product Networks

        This paper is an empirical examination of the reputation, business-stealing and income effects that pervade co-purchasing product networks. Co-purchasing between a pair of products refers to a situation where the two products are frequently purchased together (but not necessarily at the same time). Online retailers frequently use co-purchasing relationships as a basis for recommending products to their customers. (For example, Amazon has the section“Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought” for its products.) How effective is this strategy? What features of co-purchasing product networks can be used to promote the sales of a given product? These are the empirical questions of our study. To this end, we use the data collected from Amazon.com, which has three major components: (1) sales ranks (as a measure of relative sales), (2) online reviews by customers (as a proxy for product quality), and (3) co-purchasing product networks (from “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought”). We construct two sets of features for co-purchasing networks: One contains the number, the average product rating, and the average sales rank, of co-purchased products, and the other contains the same variables for co-purchased products with a two degrees of separation (co-purchased products of co-purchased products). We hypothesize that there can be various effects of co-purchased products: They may enhance the reputation of a given product by association if they are well received by consumers (Reputation effect). They also compete with the given product by being substitutes (Business-stealing effect). Finally, these products pursue the same, limited consumer budgets (Income effect). Our results show that the reputation effect might be much smaller than the business-stealing effect of co-purchased products for co-purchased products with a two degrees of separation (co-purchased products of co-purchased products) than for co-purchased products with one degree of separation. Our results shed light on how to use co-purchasing information to design an effective product recommendation strategy.

        선형 매개변수 가변 방식을 이용한 개인 이동체의 강인 제어

        In this paper, a Linear Parameter Variable(LPV) controller is proposed to ensure the velocity control of personalmobility by varying the system’s mass and inertia. Particularly, we will be testing robust control techniques on electricwheelchair-type personal mobility devices used by many people in hospitals or government offices. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed LPV approach, a kinematics-based controller, a single linear quadratic regulator(LQR) controller, and an LPV controller were compared and analyzed under the ROS Gazebo environment. Simulation results confirmed that the proposed LPV-based control method improved control performance, compared to kinematics-based controllers or LQR controllers that used fixed control values.

        A Dynamic Model of User Behavior in a Social Network Site

        This paper estimates a dynamic model of user behavior in a social network site using unique data on the daily login activity of a sample of members of MySpace.com. We view a social network as a stock of capital that yields a flow of utilities over time by creating interactions between the site user and her friends. This capital stock can be maintained and expanded by logging in to the site and communicating with other members, making the user's login decision a forward-looking one. We allow for two sources of persistence in members' login decisions: state dependence and unobserved heterogeneity. Unlike many reduced-form models used in the studies of social network sites, our structural approach allows us to perform a series of counterfactual simulations, which can be used to assess the effects of new site features on site traffic. We found two distinct types of consumers as regards utility, cost, and state transition. Across types, real-time chat and messaging, features of MySpace.com, positively affect the usage decision. Our counterfactuals simulate the effect of preventing coordination failure between users and their friends in a social network site and the effect of raising switching costs to lock users in to the site. The results show that `the bigger network' has double the effect of `the larger amount of chatting' on daily site usage after one year, consistent with the lock-in effect of a bigger network through the flow-on effects on social interactions in future periods. These simulations demonstrate that social network sites may adopt or modify our modeling approach in designing new site features.

        원추형 패턴이 적용된 GaN-LED에서의 광 추출 효율 향상을 위한 전산모사

        In this study, the light extraction efficiency of a GaN-light-emitting diode (LED) designed on a sapphire substrate was analyzed using an optical ray-tracing method. Truncated cone-shaped patterns (TCPs) on a sapphire substrate were applied to improve the light extraction efficiency. The shape of the optimized TCP was designed through simulation. As a result, the light extraction efficiency of a LED chip with a TCP applied was about twice that of the LED chip with no pattern. The light extraction efficiency was enhanced by increasing the density and decreasing the size of the pattern simultaneously, which mean that the higher the number of patterns per unit area, the better the light extraction efficiency. The improvement in the light extraction efficiency through the TCP was mostly due to the top surface because the light extraction efficiency of top surface was increased by more than 2.5 times. 기하 광학적 광선 추적 방법을 이용하여 사파이어 기판 위에 설계된 GaN-LED 구조에 대해 광 추출 효율을 분석해 보았다. 광 추출 효율을 높이고자 사파이어 기판 위쪽에 상측이 절단된 원추형 패턴을 적용하였다. 최적화된 원추형 패턴의 모양을 시뮬레이션을 통해 설계하고 그 효율을 분석한 결과 패턴이 없는 경우에 비해 광 추출 효율이 약 2배 가량 증가하였다. 또한 단위 면적당 패턴이 차지하는 밀도가 크고 동시에 패턴의 부피가 작을수록 효율이 증가함을 보였다. LED소자의 각 면에 따른 광 추출 효율 증가는 TCP (truncated cone-shape pattern)에 의해 윗면으로부터 크게 기인하고 있었다.

      • 개인 이동체의 탑승자 질량 변화에 강인한 선형 매개변수 가변 제어기법

        Linear parameter varying(LPV) system can be effectively applied to control in an environment where parameters change. And linear quadratic regulator(LQR) controller is optimal controller in state-space model. In this paper, we propose a LPV controller for velocity control of personal mobility such as an electric wheelchair, which can be varying a wheelchair mass. We are modelling a wheelchair system using dynamics and kinematics and get an interpolation parameter vector by weighing a wheelchair mass. It can be optimized control strategy for the user`s weight using the LPV control system. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed method, a single LQR controller and LPV controller were compared and analyzed using MATLAB/Simulink. The proposed method has better control performance compared to a single LQR controller.
