심흥식 ( Heung Sik Shim ) 한국협상학회 2013 협상연구 Vol.16 No.1
The present study attempted to analyse the frames of newspaper editorials that have significant impacts on the formation of public opinion in the political communication process. Due to the ideological polarization of the Korean newspapers` framing, it has been criticized that the Korean newspapers distorted the public agenda, and subsequently the newspapers failed to form public sphere. In this context, the study analyzed the editorials on the Korea-USA FTA issues from the commencement to the activation in Chosun-Ilbo and Hankyoreh. While Chosun-Ilbo is regarded as the representative conservative newspaper, Hankyoreh i s r egarded as the representative progressive newspaper in Korea. Through the analysis, this study investigated the ideological polarization of the newspapers, and proposed the possible alternatives to lessen the harmful effects of the ideological polarization of the newspapers. Through the review of Habermas` public sphere theory, the study paid attention to the pseudo-power institution phenomenon of the Korean press. On the other hand, through the review of the agenda-setting theory and framing theory, the study confirmed the media`s role of the construction of social reality. The major results of the analyses are as follows. First, regarding the diplomacy issues, sovereignty frame and Korea-USA solidarity frame were identified. Regarding the economic issues, unbalanced interest frame, competitiveness frame, open-door policy frame, and protection of economic minority frame were emerged. It, also, was identified that more editorials had rational appeal frame than emotional appeal frame. Second, Chosun-Ilbo and Hankyoreh showed differences in the thematic frame. Regarding the diplomacy issues, while Chosun-Ilbo framed the editorials in the Korea-USA solidarity frame, Hankyoreh framed editorials in the sovereignty frame. Regarding the economic issues, while Chosun-Ilbo framed editorials in the competitiveness frame and open-door policy frame, Hankyoreh framed the editorials in the unbalanced interest frame and protection of economic minority frame. While 96% of the editorials in Chosun-Ilbo were positive toward the Korea-USA FTA, 60% of the editorials in Hankyoreh were negative toward the FTA. The analyses substantiated the ideological polarization of the Korean newspapers. This means that the ideological confrontation of the newspapers may prompt the conflict in the Korean society. Based on the analyses, the study discusses frame formation process and the impacts of the media frames on the political process. In addition, suggestions for further studies are discussed.
