본 小考에서는 李德懋의 『士小節』 가운데 「童規」篇을 중심으로 전통적인 아동교육을 살펴보아 점차 황폐해져 가는 가정교육과 아동을 바른 규범으로 이끌어 인격적이고 훌륭한 인간으로 양성하는데 밑거름이 되고자 한다. 雅亭이 『士小節』을 쓰게 된 動機로 "옛날 賢人이 남긴 敎訓을 이끌어 箴警으로 갖추고, 근래에 있던 지금 사람의 사실을 적어서 보고 느끼게 하였다. 그러나 이것은 풍속을 바로잡고 남을 깨우치기 위한 것이 아니라, 자신과 가정의 법칙으로 삼기 위함일 뿐이다."라고 하여 修身과 齊家를 위한 목적이 가장 중요한 것이다. 雅亭의 뜻은 些少한 禮節을 지키는 데에 사람다운 길이 있다고 본 것이다. 아동이 글자의 이치를 이해하지 않고 단순히 암기만 하는 것은 글의 의미를 이해하지 못할 뿐 아니라, 나중에 한 글자라도 제대로 알지 못한다고 보았다. 그래서 글의 의미를 바르게 깨우치는 것을 교육의 목표로 삼아 文字敎育을 강조한 것이다. 어려서부터 몸에 밴 예절을 지키게 함으로써 전통사회가 요구하는 선비의 체모를 갖추도록 요구하는 한편 유아기의 가소성을 인정하여 나쁜 습관이 굳어지지 않도록 일상생활에서의 禮節 敎育을 강조하였다. 아동의 학습태도는 스승의 가르침을 수동적으로 받는 대상이 아니라, 아동 스스로가 사색을 통해 대상을 정확하게 관찰하여 자발적이고 참여적인 학습태도로 깨달아야 함을 강조하고 있다. 쓸데없이 많이만 가르치려 한다면 오히려 학습효과가 나지 않는다는 점을 지적하면서 기본적이고 중요한 것을 정확하게 가르쳐야 한다고 주장하고 있다. 따라서 아동의 學習力量에 적합하게 하되, 다소 여유가 있도록 가르치는 것이 훨씬 효과적인 교육이 되는 것이라고 강조하였다. 아동이 바른 학습 습관을 갖기 위해서는 글 읽는 회수와 시간을 배정하는 것이 중요함을 강조하고 있다. 그리고 아동이 하루라도 공부를 하지 않으면 이전 날에 했던 공부가 다 허사가 된다고 생각하여 매일 공부하는 습관, 즉 지속적인 학습의 중요성을 강조하였다. 아동이 바르게 교육을 받지 않을 시에는 體罰의 필요성도 강조하였다. 體罰하는 근거는 선비를 만들려는데 있으며, 體罰의 이유로는 경솔한 점을 바로 잡아주고 게으른 점을 깨우치기 위한 것이다. 李德懋의 이러한 전통적인 아동교육은 점차 황폐해져 가는 가정교육을 바로세우고 아동을 바른 규범으로 이끌어 인격적이고 훌륭한 인간으로 양성하는데 많은 도움이 되리라 생각된다. This study aims to review traditional education of children through 「Manners of Children童規」part among 『Paragraphs for A Learned Gentleman士小節』 written by Lee Duk Mu李德懋 and lead home education and children increasingly getting worse to desirable standard, letting it be a foundation to bring up children. A-Jung雅亭 said about the motive of his book 『士小節』 like this: I intend to teach and guide children through lessons from ancestors, getting children to see and think over what people actually did. But this is not for correcting wrong practice and teaching people, but only for establishing the standard of oneself and one`s home. So 雅亭 aimed at cultivating one`s morals and ruling the family, as he pointed out. His intention is that true human being depends on preserving manners. He says, if children only memorize letters without understanding them, they will not only understand the meaning of the phrase, but not know even a word correctly later. So he emphasizes on the teaching of letters for educational aim of learning the right meaning of writings. While educators make children keep their acquired manners from their earlier ages and be ready for dignity which is required in traditional society, they are supposed to teach manners in everyday life, not to have habitual bad practice, admitting the plasticity of children. Children are not subjects who passively receive what their teachers teach, instead they should observe and recognize them precisely by thoughts with active and participant attitude. As too much teaching cannot have a good effect on children, an educator is required to teach accurately them fundamental and important things. More effective teaching is to teach as much as children can digest enough, not accessively, according to their capacities. It`s important that they make a rule about how often and when children read writings for right learning habit. Continual learning is also important because the previous learning is likely to be in vain if a learner does not study for even a day. When children do not follow what they have learned, punishment will be available. It is based on bringing up a learned gentleman, through it children`s thoughtless and laziness can be corrected. This traditional education method for children will be helpful to rebuild getting useless home education, lead children to desirable standards, and bring them up as moderate and magnificent personalities.
