매우 중요한 위치를 차지했던 동양의 전통적 캘리그래피(Calligraphy)는 디지털 환경이 우리의 보편적인 환경이 된 이후 더 이상 접하기 힘들어졌을 뿐 아니라 거기에 담겨져 있는 동양적 정서를 이해하기란 더더욱 불가능하게 되었다. 그러나 최근 한글 캘리그래피는 그 범위를 빠르게 확장시키는 것을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 영화 포스터의 타이틀디자인 포장디자인 책표지 앨범 재킷 지면광고 영상광고 등 뿐 아니라 패션이나 인테리어 환경디자인에 이르기까지 거의 모든 디자인분야에서 캘리그래피가 활용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 동양의 전통적 캘리그래피의 변천 과정을 알아보고 최근의 한글 캘리그래피의 현황을 파악하였다. 또한 표준화와 획일화를 지향하는 디지털 환경에서 감성적 교감 자연의 편안함 회화적 표현과 이미지와 디자인과의 조화 등 최근의 한글 캘리그래피를 분석하고 그 발전 가능성을 알아보았다. The traditional Calligraphy of the East that has occupied a very important position could not be contacted any more since there was wider acceptance of digital environment. In addition it would be impossible for us further to understand the Oriental emotion of Calligraphy. However recently we can find out that Korean Calligraphy extends its range rapidly and easily. Calligraphy is widely used in the whole filed of design from the title design package design book cover album jacket paper advertising and image advertising etc. to fashion interior and environmental design. This study was to investigate the transitional process of such traditional Calligraphy of the East and grasp the situation of recent Korean Calligraphy. In addition this study was to analyze recent Korean Calligraphy like emotional communication ease of nature pictorial expression and harmony with image and design etc. in the digital environment aimed to the standardization and regimentation.

Since 1980s, due to the wide spread of computer, publishing by computer design process is actively used and digital font is vigorously developed. Change by computer use, extention of domain of expression provided designers unlimited possibility demanding freedom and challenge and designers forget technical limitation to express their idea. This research inspected the background of growth of typography and editorial design field drastically changing with the spread of computer. Also, this research investigated new style of digital typography as well as pursue the possibility of progress by analyzing the development of digital font and special character of technical expression with DTP.
