관립 덕어학교의 한국인 교관들 ― 근대 조선의 독일어 교육사 재고

This paper traces the careers of Korean teachers at the National German Language School, the first national educational facility for Germans in Korea, founded at the end of the 19th century. Previous studies on this language school have focused on the native German teachers, but none have fully elucidated the lives of Korean teachers who were employed there. An exploration of their backgrounds and careers provides a deeper understanding of the social effects of this school and provides an added context to the history of German language education in Korea. This paper reexamines those teachers mentioned in previous studies and presents the original list of Korean teachers at the school. On the basis of the list, this paper attempts to reveal these teachers’ lives before and after their time at the school. The teachers of the German language school included both intellectuals of the older generations and the younger generation who had received a modern education in that school. Some teachers became politically active, while others continued educating through the start of the 20th century. However, few records on either groups’ activities remain after Korea became a colony to Japan, and none of the teachers remained in public office. However, this paper reveals that one teacher continued to teach German at a private institute during the colonial period. This fact provides an important clue for rethinking the history and status of German language education in pre-liberation Korea. 본 논문은 19세기 말엽에 설립된 한국 최초의 관립 독일어 교육기관인 덕어학교의 한국인 교관들의 행적을 추적하려는 것이다. 덕어학교 및 독일인 교사에 대해서는 이미 선행연구를 통해 상당히 밝혀진 바 있으나, 한국인 교관에 관해서는 아직해명되지 않는 부분이 많다. 그런데 덕어학교의 한국인 교관들이 어떠한 경력을지녔는지를 살펴보는 것은 덕어학교의 역사적 의미, 더 나아가 한국에서의 독일어교육의 흐름에 대해 고찰하는 데에 반드시 필요한 작업이다. 본 논문에서는 기존연구가 밝힌 덕어학교의 한국인 교관들의 이름을 재검토하여 독자적인 교관 리스트를 제시하였다. 그리하여 그들이 덕어학교 교관이 되기 전에 무엇을 하였는지, 또한 교관을 그만둔 후 어떠한 길을 걸었는지를 조사하였다. 그 결과 덕어학교 교관은 구세대의 지식인과 근대적 교육을 받은 덕어학교 출신자로 구성되었으며, 1900 년대까지는 각자 그 나름으로 활약하였던 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 식민지기에 들어서는 관직에 머무른 사람은 전무하였고, 그들의 행로는 추적하기가 거의 불가능해졌다. 다만 덕어학교 교관 중에 식민지기 사립기관에서 독일어 교육에 종사하였던 자가 있었다는 사실은 알 수 있었다. 이 사실은 해방 전의 독일어 교육사 및독일어의 위상을 이해하기 위해 중요한 실마리가 될 것이다.
