In this paper the characteristics of a peltier element were experimentally investigated for development of a miniaturized cooling and heating device, which will be applied to heat and cool SMA rings of the SMA-based tool clamping device. This paper describes that the peltier element has abilities to cool as well as heat by change in direction of its applied voltage. Also, it presents that hot surface of a peltier element must be sufficiently cooled to drop the temperature of cold surface to less than 0℃. More current applied in a peltier element, more cooling performance, but increasement of the current is no account when the coolant of the hot surface is insuffcient.

This paper introduces a novel tool clamping device based on the shape memory alloy in a micro-spindle system. Experiments, such as clamping/unclamping operation, repeatability of the clamping force, hysteresis characteristic, time drift of the clamping force, and comparison of the clamping forces according to basic designs were performed. These experimental results present the feasibility of the shape memory alloys for clamping tools in a micro-spindle.

This paper presents tool-setup measurement technology of a small tool-clamping device. Generally, geometrical tool clamping error is occurred by the misalingnment between spindle rotation axis and axis of tool holder and tool. In this study, the concept of geometrical tool clamping error is established and measurement technology of the misalignment between axis of a tool holder and axis of a tool is introduced.

In this paper, the tool clamping mechanism based on shape memory effect is introduced, and the corresponding mathematical models which describe contact pressure generated by recovery stress of shape memory alloy(SMA) and deformation of the tool holder are presented. Based on the models, the constraint conditions for operation of clamping/unclamping and design for maximization of clamping force are proposed. As the results of this study, the interference between a SMA ring and the tool holder is considered as limit condition to maximize the tool clamping force, and the clearance between the tool holder and a tool should be carefully determined to have a faculty of clamping/unclamping.

This paper presents the construction of micro tool clamping device using a Ni-Ti shape memory alloy ring. Clamping force of the device is produced by elastic force of the SMA reverted to its original shape in normal temperature. Phase transformation of the SMA was realized by temperature control using a peltier element. Prototype of the SMA tool clamping device was fabricated and examined its clamping force.
