Because of the characteristics of high-rise residential building, it is important to use the stack effect for promoting a hybrid ventilation in high-rise building. Moreover, clarifying the pressure distribution and air movement characteristic between the room owing to the stack effect are also very important. Because the ventilation features are different from the building height and temperature difference, i.e. caused by stack effect. In this study, the pressure distribution and air-movement characteristics were investigated for a high-rise residential building in winter through network simulation method. From the simulation results, the characteristics of stack effect and air movement in the residential building were described.

Lately, a concern about IAQ is increasing and the demand for indoor thermal comfort is growing. These result in higher energy consumption for indoor environmental control. The hybrid ventilation system using nature power as it possible seems to reduce the energy use for ventilation and cooling. For this reason, the hybrid ventilation is widely applied in Europe and Japan. In this study, a concept of the hybrid ventilation system coupled with radiant floor heating and cooling is proposed. In this Paper, the details of hybrid ventilation system are described and the performance of the proposed systems is evaluated through physical experiment and simulation in terms of the indoor environmental control behaviors and energy saving efficiency. To analyze the possibility of indoor climate control using the hybrid ventilation system, the experiment was accomplished under intermediate season. As results, the indoor thermal environment was controlled with comfort as introducing the outdoor air when the outdoor condition was good, and the energy demand for cooling and ventilation is decreased. Based on the experimental results, the performance of the proposed system was analyzed by TRNSYS simulation in intermediate season and summer. The indoor thermal environment is controlled by radiant floor cooling mainly and the hybrid ventilation system take on a role for ventilation, night-time cooling and dehumidification under summer season. From the simulation result, energy performance of the proposed system is better than a traditional air-conditioning system. However, when outdoor humidity is high, the dehumidification load for ventilation is increased. This result suggests that the outdoor air should be introduced based on the enthalpy instead of temperature.

In this study, a hybrid air-conditioning system using fan assisted natural ventilation and radiant floor cooling will be suggested. This system is based on the concept of utilizing both natural ventilation and radiant floor cooling. The concept of radiant floor cooling has been suggested by running chilled water through piping installed for heating system in Korean housing. In this paper, the concept of a hybrid air-conditioning system and the experiment result for evaluating the applicability of the proposed system in this study will be shown.

With the improved building construction technologies, it can be possible to construct high-rise building, however, the high-rise building accompanies the un-experienced problems such as stack effect in winter in Korea. There are many countermeasures to minimize the stack effect in high-rise building, sometimes the combination of the countermeasures are correct, sometimes are not. But it is difficult to know what the correct combination is. In this study, the interaction between the countermeasures are analyzed by DOE(Design of Measurement) method and Contamw simulation. Targets office building is located in the Seoul, 45-story and reported for the problems caused by stack effect in winter. The meaning of the countermeasures for stack effect in high-rise building and its interaction will be suggested. These results will be used to plan accurate solutions for stack effect in high-rise building.

Hybrid AC system, coupled with cooling system and ventilation system with dehumidification and cooling mode in residential setting is investigated. In order to reduce the energy use for conventional cooling system, hybrid system coupled with natural ventilation seem to be promising. In this study, a ventilation system of hybrid AC is described and the performance of ventilation system is evaluated through physical experiment. And, control algorithm for a natural ventilation is suggested.

Lately residential buildings are constructed as a high-rise buildings. Building height varies from 20 stories to 30 stories and exists a height more than 50 stories. The influence on airflow such as stack effect in high-rise residential buildings is increasing with the building height is higher and higher. As result, the control methods of the dominant airflows in high-rise building become more and more important to prevent the accompanied problems. With the requirement about the health and quality of life, a ventilation equipment installation is becoming the duty in almost developed country including Korea. The purpose of this study is to develop the ventilation system of the new concept, which can maintain the living space in healthy and environment friendly. As a fundamental stage to develop a hybrid ventilation system for high-rise residential building which uses the stack effect in this study. The pressure distribution and air movement of a high-rise residential building are analyzed by a network simulation method. Moreover, some directions to develop the natural ventilation system are suggested considering the characteristics of pressure distribution in the building and the problems of previous ventilation methods. The result will be used as a data for designing the natural ventilation system.

Recently the demand for cooling is rapidly increasing in Korea due to climate change resulting from global environmental changes and the residential culture centered on apartment houses. Furthermore, there is a concern for increasing energy consumption due to the quickly rising demands for comfortableness of air conditioning with the increasing expectations on quality of life of occupants in rooms. The existing air conditioning system can not satisfied the human thermal need as compared to the natural breeze in country side where located near mountains and river side. What is short in air conditioning? The natural wind fluctuates all the time in all directions and we can not recognize its behaviors. If the fluctuation characteristics of natural wind would be generated with existing cooling system, it could be a comfortable wind for us. In this study, the characteristics of natural wind will be analyzed through chaotic analyzing methods and will be compared to the mechanical wind. In this paper, the field measurement for natural wind which accomplished at near mountain in summer will be reported. Moreover the characteristics of mechanical wind will be analyze through laboratory experiment. If fluctuation of air flow would be generated by a chaotic theory, it could be a comfortable wind for us.

High-rise buildings have some problems by stack effect. And, the solutions on the problems should be determined by considering an overall building. But, ordinarily, the countermeasures on the problems are applied to local part of the building. Local countermeasures often can be possible to arouse the secondary problems accompanied by the stack-effect. In this study, the usefulness of local countermeasures are evaluated in terms of both the reduction effect on problems and the possible secondary problems with simulations. The simulation results show that the application of countermeasures on an overall building is very important and that local countermeasures can be used optionally according to building's conditions.
