The numbers of books, news articles, and documentary films on whales and dolphins have increased dramatically in Korea. The translation of 37 species with established Korean names, as reviewed and reported by Sohn et al. (2012), Kim et al. (2010), and Kim et al. (2013) in those books and public media, was not a problem. However, 52 cetacean species, which do not have proper Korean names, have been translated into Korean, causing confusion in the public. This short note suggests Korean translations for common names that have no Korean names based on the origins of the English common names, recent scientific information, and books on cetaceans.

Vocalizations of the common dolphin Delphinus Delphis, were recorded from a single hydrophone while coastal visual survey was performed in the East Sea in March 2017. Like most Delphinidae, common dolphins produce whistles, echolocation clicks, and burst-pulsed calls, with repertoires that differ between species and geographically separated populations. This study focuses on using frequency analysis to classify sounds into three categories and to compare them with those of other common dolphin populations. The fundamental frequencies of the whistles were high in the 6 to 14 kHz range, while echolocation clicks were in the 40 to 90 kHz frequency band. These results are similar to high-energy distributions in the same frequency band in other regions. Based on this study of the acoustic characteristics of dolphins off the east coast of Korea, cetacean vocalizations can be classified using a database of cetacean sounds in Korea. In addition, this technique could improve data quality for visual whale surveys and could be applied to various other research subjects.
가덕도 상괭이(Neophocaena asiaeorientalis)의 분포 및 계절적 변화

Few studies on the finless porpoise Neophocaena asiaeorientalis have been conducted on the south coast of Korea. This region includes Gadeok Island, which is located off the Korean peninsula in an area of heavy maritime traffic. Sighting surveys of finless porpoises were conducted at seven predetermined spots around Gadeok Island in January, May, July, September, and November 2016. Finless porpoises (127 individuals in 24 schools) were sighted at all but one (spot P5) of the survey locations. Fewer porpoises were spotted in summer (Jul and Sep) than in other seasons (P<0.05). Porpoises were most abundant around the south coast of the island, where they were spotted in every season, and in significantly higher numbers than at other locations (P<0.05). Single individuals accounted for 20.8% of sightings, while 25.0% of sighted schools consisted of only two porpoises. The mean school size was 5.29 individuals (SD=6.72).

The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins Tursiops aduncus are the only cetacean species that can be observed visually on coastal areas of Jeju Island and regarded as one of valuable tour resources. We attempted to figure out location and timing information of the dolphin sightings collected from two major social media, Naver Cafe and Instagram. 142 of dolphin sighting information were derived from 2,501 dolphin related postings on Naver Cafe between 2004 to 2017. 292 informative postings also were found on Instagram through hashtag searching. The number of posts about dolphin sighting was not frequent until 2014. Since 13 posts were found in 2014, dramatic increase of the sighting numbers was accelerated as 38 in 2015, 93 in 2016 and 269 in 2017. 195 (45.7%) from coastal area of Daejeong-eup, south-western part of the Island, were posted. The number of dolphin sightings also high from Gujwa-eup(n=50, 11.7%), Hangyeong-myeon (n=49, 11.5%), Seongsan-eup (n=38, 8.9%) and Seogwipo-si (n=34, 8.0%). Our results show that social media data has a high potential to be used as a data source for study of distribution pattern of the dolphins.
음향을 이용한 남해 연안에 서식하는 상괭이(Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) 의 출현 특성 연구

The sound of finless porpoises Neophocaena asiaeorientalis was recorded with an acoustic recorder to confirm their emergence in the South Sea of South Korea in February, June, and November 2020. Sea water temperature and salinity were also measured. In addition, a sighting survey was conducted to observe the behavior of the finless porpoises and the marine environment, and the clicks of the finless porpoises were recorded every day. The results showed that they always emerged in the survey area. The finless porpoises mainly foraged, whereas some played or rested. The water temperature range of areas where the finless porpoises emerged was 7.5-23.5℃. Assuming that the number of clicks corresponds to the number of finless porpoises, the finless porpoises emerged the most during spring. The emergence decreased during winter and was the lowest during autumn. The finless porpoises emerged more during the daytime than during the nighttime in all seasons, indicating a temporal difference in the usage of the survey area. This might be due to the movement of prey organisms according to regional characteristics. A long-term survey and research on habitat use and environment is needed to manage and conserve the finless porpoises.

Little is known about the movements of finless porpoises Neophocaena asiaeorientalis and their relationship with sea surface temperature (SST). A female finless porpoise that was stranded alive on the shore at Busan was rehabilitated for 16 months at the Sea Life Busan Aquarium. The porpoise was released off Geoje Island with a satellite tag on her mid-ridge and tracking data were received for 7 days. The porpoise moved directly to the southern shore of Gadeok Island, where an earlier study reported that finless porpoises were most abundant around the island. The tracking route revealed two other potential primary habitats. The porpoise moved to the middle of the east coast of the Korean Peninsula at Uljin, beyond the distribution boundary known from earlier studies. Satellite infrared images detected a cold water mass off the Uljin coast and the tracking route showed that the porpoise avoided this low-temperature area.

There are six species of pinnipeds in Korean waters. Because of the lack of research on pinnipeds, it has been difficult to obtain ecological information on each species. All six species have been designated as endangered species, marine protected species, or national monuments by the government, depending on historical records. In this study, the current status of pinnipeds in Korea was investigated through reviewing the literature, and sighting and bycatch records, with the intention of providing new information for the review of the six species. Spotted seals and northern fur seals are well known inhabitants of Korea. The southern part of the East Sea is thought to be the margin of the distribution of Steller sea lions. Sightings of ribbon seals and ringed seals were not confirmed in Korean waters. Sea lions have not been seen since their last sighting on Dokdo in 1951 and are thought to have become extinct after that. It is necessary to delist undistributed or extinct species in Korea from the marine protected species list.
