The theoretical analysis of microstrip slot antenna fed by a strip transmission line can be obtained applying transmission line theory with a discontinuity of the slot. The theoretical results are in close agreement with experimental observations.

Romanticism and Korea: A Missed Encounter?

18세 후반에서 19세기 전반기에 걸쳐 부흥하였으며 서양의 근대사상사에 가장 많은 영향력을 미친 것으로 평가받는 낭만주의는 1920년경 식민 지배국이었던 일본을 경유하여 주로 당시 일본에 유학중이던 엘리트 지식인들을 통해 한국에 유입되었다. 낭만주의는 당시 동시다발적으로 유입된 다양한 서구의 문예사조를 통틀어 일컫는 용어, 즉 유럽적이거나 서구적이라는 지역성을 넘어, 외부에서 유입된 모든 이질적인 요소를 아우르는 ‘외래성/ 타자성’의 개념으로 이해될 수 있다. 근대역사에 두드러진 외래성과의 조우로 여겨지는 낭만주의와 한국의 만남은, 그러나, 대체로 바람직한 문화적 도킹으로 이해되지 않았다. 식민 지배국에 의해 강요된 문호개방, 엘리트 중심주의, 그리고 이중 번역된 텍스트 등 낭만주의는 한국적인 토착화를 어렵게 하는 여러 물질적 조건에 기반하고 있었다. 그래서 한국에서 낭만주의는 원 텍스트의 정확한 읽기에 관한 다소간 소모적인 논쟁이나 한국 낭만주위가 낭만주의의 본정신을 제대로 수용하지 못한 변종 혹은 기형의 일종이라는 시각을 중심으로 주로 논의되어 왔다. 본고는 당대의 문학 작품 및 이후 한국의 문화 현상을 추적해 이러한 ‘어긋남’이야말로 외래성의 본질이며 낭만주의는 토착화가 아니라 낯섦 자체에서 한국사회에 계속 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여준다.

The Meaning of Places in Jude the Obscure

Hardy says in 'Preface' to Jude the Obscure, "Like former productions of this pen, Jude the Obscure is simply an endeavour to give shape and coherence to a series of seemings, or personal impressions, the question of their consistency or their discordance, of their permanence or their transitoriness, being regarded as not of the first moment."1) This impressionistic statement seems to have influenced some critics' judgments of the work in a negative way, as Hardy's last novels, especially Jude the Obscure, have been largely observed to evince increasingly personal and aesthetically undisciplined meditations or attacks on human fate and certain social institutions. For Carl Weber, Jude the Obscure is simply an unconstrained propaganda. He says, "If Hardy failed, as he did, it was not because the novel, as an art-form, is unfitted to bring about social reform; it was because Hardy's aim was too sweeping, his skill too defective, and--it must be admitted--his artistic control too frenzied."2) And Arthur Mizener disapproves of the quality of Jude the Obscure as a tragedy because "Hardy never really posed for himself the question on how the meaning of his impressions could be coherent without being consistent."3) He blames Hardy's too personal involvement in the novel, which renders the author's doctrines the only test of value, for the failure of the novel as a tragedy.

융합론적 관점에서 낭만적 과학관 재고하기 - 워즈워스, 언캐니, 상상력 -

This essay reviews science in Romanticism through the key words of Wordsworth, the uncanny, and imagination. Adopting the Freudian and Lacanian definition of it, I interpret the uncanny as a threat of the lack inhering in the symbolic desire of the subject being lacking, causing suffocation through a complete satisfaction of the desire. As science and imagination are twins as triggers of the uncanny by being fixed either to the materialistic dimension of the world or to the imaginary dimension of narcissistic self-love, so are they as its mutual antidotes: the uncanny of the former is counteracted by an imaginative flight of the narcissistic subject and that of the latter by the recovery of the materialistic sense of the world. I examine Wordsworth's view of science in his “Preface” to The Lyrical Ballads and read in detail key science-relevant passages of The Prelude and The Excursion and several short poems. In conclusion, by applying the thesis of this paper to the discussion of the uncanny in robotics, I present a short example of a dialogic convergence study. 본고는 워즈워스, 언캐니, 상상력의 3가지 키워드를 중심으로 낭만적 과학관을 재고한다. 본고는 언캐니를 프로이트와 라캉의 정신분석학적 해석과 돌라르의 과학론적 재해석을 통해 상징계의 결여가 사라지는 과도한 충족의 공포로 정의한다. 상징계의 구조적 결여가 욕망의 원인이라며 언캐니는 실재의 임박함으로 욕망이 과도하게 충족되면서 오히려 질식감을 유발하는 사태다. 이로부터 본고는 낭만주의 문학에서 과학과 상상력은 상호 언캐니의 유발자이자 해독제의 관계에 있음을 주장한다. 과학은 물질성에 고착된 실재의 환상으로 언캐니를 유발한다면 이때 상상력은 자기반영적 환상을 찾아 나섬으로써 과학의 물질적 질식상태를 중화시킨다. 상상력은 넘치는 자기반영적 환상이 물적 토대를 억압함으로써 질식감을 유발한다면 이때 과학은 세계의 물질성을 회복함으로써 상상력의 질식감을 중화시킨다. 실제 비평적 접근으로 본고는 워즈워스의 「서문」을 분석하여 시와 과학은 이상적일 때 즐거운 지식의 생산자로서 동반자 관계를 이루며 그 관계를 유지하는 조건이 삶의 결여에 대한 인식을 유지함으로써 언캐니의 공포를 삶의 역동성으로 개방적으로 수용하는 데 있음을 밝힌다. 이어 서곡 과 유람 , 그리고 일련의 단시들을 중심으로 언캐니의 유발자이자 해독제로서 과학과 상상력이 서로 적대관계부터 동반자 관계까지 다양하게 현상함을 특히 ‘시’가 어떻게 ‘과학’에 의해 보완될 수 있는지에 방점을 두고 살펴본다. 끝으로 본고의 융합론적 논지가 언캐니에 대한 로봇공학적 논의에 대해 갖는 함의를 정리한다.

상대성 이론과 상대주의-관점의 시각으로 살펴보는 탈경계적 사고의 가능성-

This paper is to tackle the growing sense of distance between science and humanities through a comparative discussion of theory of relativity and relativism. Against the dichotomy of scientific absolutism and humanistic relativism, I argue that science and humanities are similarly double-phased when considered in terms of a viewpoint. Though unique in the attempt to regularize and objectify, science advances only through an unusual relativistic view of the fixed realities. Humanities, more or less relativistic basically, nonetheless abstains from anarchistic malady only through a balanced view of both attractions and dangers of relativism and absolutism. Thus the conclusion reached is that the distance between the two knowledges is real, which, however, is not too far to overcome as far as a specific understanding of each knowledge precedes naive pessimism or even optimism.

동·서양 일월 신화에 나타나는 성차 담론의 반복과 차이 - 원형론·구조론·위상론과 전복적 여성성 -

The signifier of sexual difference is always adopted in the Eastern and Western mythologies on the sun and the moon. This essay amid to discuss what femininity would be like as a subversive force to oppressing and discriminating society by reading four representative sun and moon myths of the East and the West: the Greek-Roman mythology of Apollo and Diana, the Norse mythology of Sól and Máni, the Chinese mythology of Nuwa and Fuki, and the Korean mythology of “The Sun and the Moon.” This essay analyzes the characteristics of the gender and power relationship of the sun and the moon in the four myths and interprets them through the theories of Jung’s archetype, Lévi-Strauss’ structure and Lacan’s topology. Dialogically discussing the possibilities and limitations of each theory for the recovery of subversive femininity, this essay highlights the fluidity of sexual difference in the Korean mythology of “The Sun and the Moon” as a possible model for the new feminine ethics of inclusion and infinity.

유전체층으로 덮힌 윗면의 주기적인 슬릿을 갖는 평행평판 도파관으로부터의 누설파 복사

Leaky wave radiation problem from a parallel-plate waveguide(PPW) with finite number of periodic slits in its upper plate covered by a dielectric slab is considered for the TEM wave incidence case. Integral equation for the electric field over the slits is derived and solved numerically by use of the method of moments. Some numerical results for the quantities of interest such as reflected and transmitted powers in the PPW, the coupled power through the slits, the radiation efficiency into the free space, the surface wave launching efficiency into the slab from the slit, antenna gain, and radiation patterns against dielectric thickness are presented. Especially, the effect of the dielectric cover on the performances of the slitted leaky wave antenna is discussed in detail.

When a dielectric-filled edge-slot(DFES) antenna, which is made by circumferentially removing the outer conductor of a coaxial waveguide is coated by a dielectric layer for radome, characteristics of antenna are investigated theoretically. The integral equations are derived by use of the Fourier transform and mode expansion, and the simultaneous linear equations are obtained. The effects of the slot width and thickness, and dielectric coating are examined, and the reflection coefficient and radiation pattern are presented.

The backscattering echo width solution of a dielectric coated slotted circular cylinder with thickness is investigated by using mode-matching technique. It is shown that not only coating material and size of the geometry, but also thickness of the slotted cylinder can cause great influence to the RCS characteristics of the cavity goemetry. It is also found that the slot material can plays important role in RCS variation of the slotted cylinder with thickness.
