A Study of Daughters in Daniel Deronda and One of Our Conquerors

Vol.46 No.4

The relationships between mothers and daughters do not reveal their intimacy or solidarity but their disparity or conflict in the novels. Mothers are more often than not unable to fulfil their roles for their daughters and to protect their daughters against the society. And they are so weak and frail and have so much worldliness, lack of morality, and conventionality that they can be an obstacle to their daughters' growth and development. But daughters are maturer, wiser, more sensible than their mothers and they conflict with their mothers and moreover with their society. This essay studies the social aspects of the Victorian time, particularly about women and the ideal womanhood. And, through the study of George Eliot's Daniel Deronda and George Meredith's One of Our Conquerors, it examines how the mothers of the novels suffer socially and mentally and become it's victims in the male-centered society and how they exercise their influence over their daughters in opposition to their experience or past unconventionality, and how the daughters in the relationship with their mothers cope with their mothers' influences and how they strive to gain their independence and freedom struggling against the pressure of the ideologies of womanhood and restraints on women from the patriarchal society which seems to be still premature for most fictional daughters, and if they could turn themselves into a new woman of the time.

Vol.53 No.1

This essay studies some elements of children’s literature in Charles Dickens’s Hard Times, along with a possibility of regarding this novel as children’s literature though it is usually known as social novel or industrial novel. First, I consider the concept of child and childhood, the definition of children’s literature, and elements and characteristics of children’s literature. And then I also examine pleasure and enjoyment, usefulness for education and vicarious experience, imagination, and treatment of social issues as elements of children’s literature. Particularly among the elements of children’s literature, this essay considers the concept of fancy or imagination, what Dickens says about fancy, how his imagination is represented, and what effect the lack of fancy has on people and society in the novel. Based on the fact that Dickens had deep interest in fairy tales for his whole life and used fairy tales in his novels, this essay studies the aspects and effects of the fairy tale and how and why Dickens uses the fairy tale in the novel. This essay proves that the novel has various elements of children’s literature, that the fairy tale is used for Dickens’s literary and moral purpose, and that this novel can exert a similar effect on readers though it is not easy yet to regard Hard Times as children’s literature definitely.

Vol.51 No.2

This essay aims at studying the aspect of various types of love in Ian McEwan’s Enduring Love. The main character of the novel, Joe, is possessed by his guilt for John Logan’s death in the accident of the balloon. With this, he is leading his relationship with his girlfriend Clarissa into catastrophe because he is stalked by a young man called Jed Parry with the de Clérambault’s syndrome. Joe is getting more obsessed with Jed when Jed is driving Joe into having an unusual relationship with him and Joe is isolating himself from Clarissa by indulging himself in studying why Jed loves him. The balloon accident involves various characters and brings into an aggravated relationship between Joe and Clarissa, an unusual relationship between Joe and Jed, Mrs Logan’s misunderstanding of her husband, and the revelation of Professor Reid’s secret relationship with his student. The essay studies the formation and development, the entanglement and shift, and the cause and result, of the relationships between the characters in relation with love, selfishness and guilt. Eventually, it will make clear the meaning of genuinely enduring love through the various relationships.

Vol.5 No.1

"The one deep strong love I have ever known" in The Mill on the Floss This essay intends to examine the source of Maggie's determination to return from her elopement with Stephen despite the society's contempt for her and to reconcile herself with her brother despite his rejection of her in The Mill on the Floss. First, the aspects of father-daughter relationship in the Victorian times has been examined and, according to that, the relationship between Mr Tulliver and Maggie has been examined on the basis of George Eliot's own relationship with her father. With this examination, why George Eliot could never forget this love form her father from her childhood and why she intended to show this love through Maggie has been revealed.

Effect of Addition of Citric Acid on Whisker Formation

Vol.11 No.-

In order to synthesize hydroxyapatite whiskers, 0.01M-tricalciumphosphate solutions containing citric acid were hydrothermally treated. The whiskers could not formed from the plain solutions prepared with a or B tricalciumphosphate without addition of citric acid. The addition of citric acid was revealed to be favorable for the crystallization of whiskers elongated up to 40-60pm along the c-axis. The least amount of addition of citric acid for the desirable whiskers was 1.4 wt%. while the addition of citric acid of more than 2 wt% caused the P-TCP to form

The Father-Daughter Relationship inThomas Hardy’s The Woodlanders

Vol.48 No.2

This study aims at the father-daughter relationship in Thomas Hardy’s The Woodlanders drawn heavily on his family background. It reveals the effect which the parent’s social and economic ambition for a child have upon individual, family and social life. Throughout the novel, Melbury, a father, has to bear the suffering to see his loving daughter’s unhappiness in a disastrous marriage into which he urges her, and Grace in practice suffers from her unhappy marriage. This study focuses on how Melbury tries to materialize his strong ambition in his daughter and to settle her unhappy marriage, and on Grace’s course of life into a disaster caused by her father’s demand and her own submission and insufficient self-assertion, such as her education which makes her a conventional woman, her rejection of Giles, her attraction and marriage to Fitzpiers and her unhappiness. Eventually, this study tries to show that this novel is a tragedy resulting from the close father-daughter relationship by studying the aspects of this relationship.

Vol.36 No.12

In order to improve the density and the mechanical strength without change in chemical composition the hardened pastes of hydroxyapatite cement were reinforced with powders and/or whiskers of hydroxyapatite. The powders behaved as a seed of hydroxyapatite formation rather than a filler while the whiskers were mrerly dispersed in matrix and capillary pores of the hardened bodies leading to increase in mechanical strength. But the increase in strength But the increase in strength was nnt enough owing to the lack of homogeneous dispersion of the fibers. The highest diametral tensile strength of 18.5 MPa was measured at the hardened hydroxyapatite body in which well-dispersed whisker phase formed uniformly during hydro-thermal curing of power-added and dry-formed hydroxyapatite cement.
