Organic photovoltaic cells(OPVs) have attracted much attention due to its potential applications such as low cost, low weight, and capability to be fabricated into flexible large area devices by solution process. Bulk heterojunction(BHJ) organic photovoltaic formed from a blend of π-conjugated polymeric electron-donor(D) and fullerene derivative electron acceptor(A). This structure is considered as an ideal structure for OPVs, because the BHJ blend can improved photovoltaic performance. Quinacridone, which is known as electron donor, has a high crystallinity, self-assembled characteristics and high hole mobility. Benzothiadiazoleis thought to be a acceptor unit since it has a strong electron-withdrawing character. In this work, we synthesized and characterized D-A polymers by Suzuki coupling reaction with different π-bridge units.We investigated the correlation among the backbone conformations of the polymers and physical, optical, electrochemical, photovoltaic properties.

Organic photovoltaic cells(OPVs) have been significantly studied as low cost, low weight, and capability to be fabricated into flexible large area devices by solution process. Recently, two-dimensional(2D) conjugated polymers with conjugated side chains have been proven to successful strategies in the molecular design of high performance materials. This type of polymers feature lowering HOMO energy level and extended 2D-conjugated polymer could enhance the miscibility with fullerene acceptors in BHJ device fabrication. Diketopyrrolopyrrole(DPP) unit has a well conjugated structure with strong π-π interaction and electron-withdrawing effect, which results in efficient charge transport. In this work, we synthesized and characterized DPP based 2D-conjugated polymer by Suzuki coupling reaction. We investigated the physical, electrochemical, optical and photovoltaic properties.

Different conjugated 2D-side groups were introduced to polymerize four types of two-dimensionalpolymers, PQCT-m8Qx, PQCT-mEHQx, PQCT-BT and PQCT-DPP, through a Suzuki coupling reaction. Incomparison with the linear polymer which used the same backbone, the two-dimensional (2D)conjugated side chain polymer exhibits the delocalization of its electron clouds due to the extension ofthe side chain. So, all four polymers showed a low HOMO level, thus showing high VOC. Among the four,the HOMO level of PQCT-BT was the lowest, by5.63 eV. When manufacturing a device, VOC was 0.92 V,which is the highest.
