In this study, an integrated module with steam reformer and catalytic combustor using anode off-gas of high temperature fuel cell (MCFC, SOFC) was experimentally investigated. The integrated module consisted of Catalytic combustion domain of which diameter is 40㎜ and steam reforming domain of which diameter is 40㎜. Fins were installed to maximize heat of combustion domain to reforming domain. Combustion catalyst was Pd/Pt-based cylindrical catalyst with 5㎜ diameter, reforming catalyst was Ru/Ni-based spherical catalyst with 3㎜ diameter. As a results, the experimental results are good agreement with the calculated results. Also it can be used for making integrated module with steam reformer and catalytic combustor using anode off-gas of high temperature fuel cell.

Characteristics of a commercial metal hydride (MH) hydrogen supply system have been investigated and an operating strategy was developed based on the experimental data. As a prior step, charging/discharging capacity, thermal properties such as heat capacity, heat of reaction of MH system were experimentally measured. And then P-C-T data for various operating conditions were collected and a correlation between P, C and T predicting the behavior of MH was derived. Based on the basic experimental data, an operating strategy of MH system was developed, in which the hot water temperature supplied into the water jacket of MH was controlled depending on the pressure of MH, thereby the pressure of MH could be maintained at a suitable range. By adjusting the temperature of hot water from 40℃ to 60℃, the maximum discharging capacity of hydrogen could be increased by 4.7%,and consequently more stable hydrogen supply and longer operation time of fuel cell system could be achieved.

The reaction characteristics of an integrated reactor with steam reformer and catalytic combustor using anode offgas for high temperature fuel cells such as MCFC and SOFC have been experimentally investigated in the present study. The coupled reactor had a coaxial cylindrical shape, and the inner and the outer tube was packed with combustion catalysts and reforming catalysts, respectively. Thus, the endothermic steam reforming could proceed by absorbing heat from catalytic combustion of anode offgas. Results show that increasing inlet temperature and decreasing excess air ratio increased the reformer temperature, which led to the increase in H2 yield. The reforming performance for SOFC conditions was better than that for MCFC conditions since the composition of flammable components became smaller for MCFC cases. Measured reformate composition under various test conditions correlated well with thermal equilibrium composition.
