Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, which was first reported by DuVernoy in 1730 from the path- ologic finding at autopsy, is a relatively rare condition characterized by multiple intramural pockets of gas involving any portion of the gastrointestinal tract and occasionally the mesenteric attach- ments. The mean age is 56.6 years old, predominantly in male, involves small bowel frequently and combined with other gastrointestinal lesions in 85g of cases. Treatment is conservative for the symptoms of combined gastrointestinal lesion and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease because of spontaneous regression, but surgery is indicated for the development of complications such as intussusception, volvulus, obstruction, bleeding and perforation. Pneumatosis in adults frequently has a benign course and prognosis, depending upon associated diseases of the gastrointestinal or pulmonary organs. Infantile pneumatosis intestina]is associated with necrotizing enteritis, however, is a more serious condition and has a high mortality rate. Authors report a case of the Pneurnatosis cystoides intestinalis which was treated surgically due to duodenal ulcer with pyloric obstruction and review the recent literature.
