필자는 졸고 논문 “확률적 설명 모형이 설명의 기준을 제시할 수 있는가”에서 설명 모형의 과제를 설명적 유관성의 조건을 제시하는 것으로 설정하고, 확률적 설명 모형이 이 과제를 달성할 수 없다는 논변을 구성했으며, 이어 대안적 설명 모형으로서 반사실 조건문적 설명 모형을 제안했다. 최근의 한 논문에서 고인석 박사는, 필자의 논변과 필자의 설명 모형에 대해서 몇 가지 비판들을 제기했다. 필자는 이 논문을 통해 고인석 박사의 비판들을 하나씩 살펴보면서, 그 비판들이 각각 필자의 입장에 대한 오해들에 기인하거나 반사실 조건문의 의미론, 설명적 유관성파 설명적 적합성의 구분, 인과와 설명의 관계 등에 대한 오해들에 기인한다는 것을 보인다. 고인석 박사가 범한 오해들 중 많은 것들은, 설명, 확률, 인과, 반사실 조건문 등의 주제들을 다루면서 우리들이 범하기 쉬운 잘못의 일반적인 패턴을 예시하고 있는 것으로서 고려할 가치가 있다고 여겨진다.

시간에 대한 태도와 무시제적 시간 이론: 프라이어의 퍼즐을 중심으로

The tensed theory of time and the tenseless theory of time are two main opponents in contemporary debates in the philosophy of time. Prior’s puzzle is one of the most important and interesting objections to the tenseless theory of time. This puzzle reveals that the tenseless theory of time faces serious difficulties in explaining our certain attitudes to time. In this paper, I critically examine Mellor’s and Macbeath’s attempts to overcome these difficulties. Then I reconstruct Prior’s puzzle in a stronger form and show that Mellor’s and Macbeath’s responses miss the crucial point of Prior’s puzzle: the tenseless theory of time faces serious difficulties in explaining the rationality of our certain attitudes to time. 시간에 대한 현대의 많은 중요한 철학적 논쟁들은 시제적 시간 이론(tensed theory of time)과 무시제적 시간 이론(tenseless theory of time) 사이에 이루어지고 있다. 시제적 시간 이론의 진영에 의해 무시제적 시간 이론에 대해 제기된 가장 흥미롭고 중요한 반론 중 하나는 바로 프라이어의 퍼즐(Prior’s puzzle)이다. 이 퍼즐은 시간에 대한 우리의 어떤 태도들이 무시제적 시간 이론에 의해서는 설명되기가 어렵다는 문제를 제기한다. 필자는 이 논문에서 무시제적 시간 이론을 옹호하는 철학자들-특히 멜러(H. Mellor)와 맥비스(M. Macbeath)-이 프라이어의 퍼즐에 대해 대응해 제시한 해결책들이 지닌 설명력과 한계를 함께 비판적으로 검토한다. 또한 필자는 그런 해결책들이 프라이어의 퍼즐에 의해 제기되는 가장 심각하고 근본적인 도전에 대해 간과하고 있음을 보이기 위해서, 프라이어의 퍼즐을 보다 강력한 방식으로 재구성하여, 무시제적 시간 이론이 시간에 대한 어떤 태도들의 합리성을 설명하는 데에 어려움을 가진다는 것을 논변한다.

Unjustified true beliefs are true by luck. One needs justification in order to avoid such an epistemic luck. But Gettier-type cases show that sometimes even justified beliefs are true by luck. Thus, we can distinguish two kinds of epistemic luck. In this paper, I employ possible-worlds framework to explain the difference between these two kinds of epistemic luck. Moreover, I propose a necessary condition of knowledge to deal with the second type of epistemic luck. Since a similarity relation between possible worlds is importantly used in this condition, I inquire into what respect of similarity should be considered to be important. In addition. I compare my account with David Lewis’ similar account of knowledge. 정당화되지 않은 참인 믿음들은 요행스럽게 참이다. 우리는 그런 인식적 요행을 피하기 위해서 정당화 조건을 필요로 한다. 그러나 게티어 유형 사례들은 때로 정당화된믿음들까지도 요행스럽게 참일 수 있다는 것을 보여 준다. 그리하여 두 종류의 인식적 요행이 구별된다. 이 논문에서 필자는 두 종류의 인식적 요행 사이의 차이에 대해가능 세계 논의 틀에 기초한 설명을 하고, 두 번째 유형의 인식적 요행을 다룰 수 있게끔 지식의 네 번째 필요조건을 제시한다. 이 조건에는 가능 세계들 사이의 유사성관계가 중요하게 이용되는데, 그 유사성이 어떤 측면에서의 유사성이어야 하는가에대해서 필자는 탐구한다. 필자의 지식 개념 분석은 루이스(D. Lewis)가 제시한 지식개념 분석과 유사성을 지니고 있기에, 필자는 이 두 분석을 비교해서 함께 논의한다.

There are several issues that need to be addressed in relation to how my counterfactual theory of explanation can be applied to metaphysical explanations. Focusing on the problems raised by Professor Sungil Han, I discuss how to deal with them within the framework of the counterfactual theory of explanation and other semantic and pragmatic auxiliary theories. In particular, I mainly deal with the problem of explaining the truth of propositions, and also deal with the problem of explanation at the macro level and the problem of meta-explanation. This shows that the problems do not pose a threat to the counterfactual theory of explanation and can be fully embraced within my theory. 필자의 반사실 조건문적 설명 이론이 형이상학적 설명에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는가와 연관해서 해결해야 할 몇 가지 문제의 영역들이 있다. 이와 관련해서 한성일 교수가 제기한 문제들을 중심으로 그 문제들을 반사실 조건문적 설명 이론과 그 밖의 의미론 및 화용론의 틀 안에서 어떻게 다룰 수 있는지 논의한다. 특히 명제의 진리에 대한 설명 문제를 중심적으로 다루고, 그밖에 거시적인 수준의 설명 문제와 결정 관계를 통한 메타적 설명 문제도 다룬다. 이를 통해서 그 문제들이 반사실 조건문적 설명 이론에 위협이 되지 않고 필자의 이론 안에서 충분히 포용될 수 있다는 것을 보인다.

반말과 계층 구조:정대현 교수의 반말 이론에 대한 비판적 검토

Professor Daihyun Chung has recently presented an intriguing view of Ban-mal (non-honorific expressions) in Korean. He criticizes uses of Ban-mal, on the grounds that they presuppose the existence of hierarchical structures in human beings. Professor Chung also advocates “a relational theory of Ban-mal” according to which ascriptions of ‘n-mal’ should be relativized to the speaker-hearer relationship. He employs this view in showing that uses of Ban-mal indeed presuppose the existence of hierarchical structures in human beingsI claim that Professor Chung has not shown the credibility of his relational theory of Ban-mal, and that this very view leads to an unintended and undesirable consequence. Moreover, I show that, even if we assume that this view is true for the sake of an argument, he is not able to show that uses of Ban-mal indeed presuppose the existence of hierarchical structures. All he can show is rather that uses of ‘Ban-mal’(a meta-linguistic expression) presuppose the existence of hierarchical structures. Finally, I conclude that what really presupposes the existence of hierarchical structures is the asymmetrical uses of Ban-mal and honorific expressions.
