The hyphal growth, production of color pigments and monacolin K by Monascus strains were investigated in liquid medium. Thirty five different strains were collected and cultured in potato dextrose yeast extract broth (PDYB), potato dextrose broth (PDB) and malt extract broth (MEB) medea at 25℃ for 7 days. The growth rates of most of strains were highest in PDYB medium. Growth rate as well as pigment production were influenced by suspension conditions of mycelia during liquid cultivation. Most of strains producing monacolin K corresponded to strains producing red pigment highly and showing more pH changes of liquid media. Monacolin K produced from strains was detected in culture broth as well as mycelia. Any citrinin was not detected in monacolin K producing strains. These results imply that the selection of the strains producing red pigment highly and showing more pH changes in liquid cultivation could be applied for primary screening of Monascus strains for preparation of red mold rice.

Purpose: Intake and output measurement methods are inconsistent in nursing practice. An evidence-based nursing case study was conducted to provide evidence on intake measurement methods and to ultimately promote nursing practice. Methods: The PICO format was used to generate a clinical question on intake measurement methods(fluid only vs. all types of food) and its associations between the differences in intake and output, and body weight changes. A literature search was conducted through both the national and international databases, and the selected articles were assessed using the Risk of Bias Assessment tool for Nonrandomized Study. The level of evidence was graded using the GRADE system. Results: In total, 1,223 articles were screened, and four articles were selected in this study. Studies have indicated that there are no significant differences between the two methods(fluid only vs. all types of food) on both intake and output differences and body weight changes. The risk of bias in the literature was generally low, except for the intervention measurement area. Conclusion: There is no evidence that there are significant differences in intake measurement methods in intake and output differences and body weight changes. We suggest a fluidonly intake measurement method to improve the accuracy and convenience of nursing practice(weak recommendation, moderate quality evidence).

Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether there was a difference in infection rates between periodic exchange of tracheostomy tubes every 14 days and every 28 days. Methods: We searched five electronic databases and reviewed the studies according to these criteria. The final three studies (one non-random control study and two guidelines) were selected. Results: The quality evaluation results were checked as recommendations for the two guidelines and as having a low risk of bias for one study. One study was also checked to be 2++ according to the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network. When the tracheostomy tube is exchanged every 28 days, there is insufficient evidence that the infection rate is high compared to the case of exchanging every 14 days. Conclusion: We recommend that patients have their tracheostomy tubes exchanged every 28 days. In the patient group at high risk of infection, the timing of the exchange should be determined according to the clinical condition of the patient.
