In connection with the synthesis of the biologically active pimarane diterpenoids, some synthetic routes to the quaternary carbon unit were examined. Especially, Claisen rearrangement of allyl acetates prepared from acetol provided gamma-hydroxy acid containing vinyl substituent as the desired unit.

The first and versatile total synthesis of isopimarol diterpene has been achived via stereoselective construction of C-13 quanternary carbon unit as a key step. Isopimarol diterpene was systhesized from the known decalone in 17% overall yield of 16 steps.

Synthesis of an optically active azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane skeleton as a backbone of the tropane alkaloids has been achieved by employing intramolecular Mannich reaction. Utilization of (R)-alpha-methylbenzylamine as a chiral auxiliary provided an excellent cyclization of amino dioxolane precursor. However, this auxiliary did not afford high asymmertic induction for the preparation of the optically active cyclization precursor.

An unusual 10-membered lactone possesing ring-olefin at 7,8-position has been efficiently synthesized. The w-hydroxy acid as a cyclization precusor was derived from epsilon-caprolactone in 41% overall yield of 7 steps and efficiently cyclized by Mukaiyama procedure.
