The purpose of this study is to suggest a way of improving class authenticity by using authentic items and tasks. In total, 88 elementary students from two groups participated in the study. The experimental group was instructed with authentic items. This group viewed a video clip, made by the teacher, in which students and English teachers engaged in a shopkeeper-customer role play, and held their own English flea market with Korean currency and items they brought from home. Meanwhile, the control group was instructed with picture cards, the conversation video clip of the textbook CD-ROM, and the textbook-based buying and selling activity. The results reveal that even a tiny little thing such as a ball is able to create more interest among learners than the picture card. It also suggests if the learners feel close to the people on the video clip, they show more interest in the topic.
