In order to determine for suitable scavenging type for a hydrogen-fueled free piston engine, Backfire characteristic is analyzed about intake valve opening timing and equivalence ratio by using RICEM(Rapid Intake Compression Expansion Machine) that has reverse uni-flow scavenging. As the result, Flame of slow combustion in crevice volume with cause of backfire is effect on intake valve open timing. Backfire is controlled by retarding intake valve opening timing when is retarded from BBDC 7.5㎜ at equivalence ratio from 0.7 to 1.0

In order to control backfire for a hydrogen-fueled free-piston engine, occurrence backfire and characteristic of combustion are analyzed about area and of exhaust valve by using RICEM(Rapid Intake Compression Expansion Machine) for free piston engine that has uniflow scavenging. As the results, increasing area of exhaust valve is profited to control backfire due to retarded opening timing of backfire limit exhaust valve. In addition, thermal efficiency is decreased by increasing equivalence ratio but it shows effect of compensation with changing area of exhaust valve.
