A cross-country study of gambling fallacies: South Korea, USA, and Switzerland
백기준,이충기,신민정 한국관광연구학회 2022 관광연구저널 Vol.36 No.10
This study assesses gambling fallacy roles in three countries (South Korea, USA, and Switzerland) based on their problem gambling status and independent and interdependent self-construal. Online surveys obtained three separate data sets for South Korea, USA, and Switzerland via local online panel companies, and a confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the convergent and discriminant validity of the measurement. An ANOVA also tested differences in gambling fallacy factors between recreational and pathological gamblers in the three countries. The ANOVA results indicate that each gambling fallacy factor had significant main effects on gambler types. Pathological gamblers in USA scored highest on the system-to-win factor, followed by Switzerland and Korea. Superstitions and follow and blame factors for pathological gamblers in Korea were higher than in USA and Switzerland. Additionally, the cultural backgrounds of pathological gamblers produced gambling fallacy variances. This study contributes to the literature in that a three-country data set validated the distinctive four-factor setting of the gambling fallacy scale. Findings highlight each gambling fallacy factor for recreational and pathological gamblers as unique across the three countries. Furthermore, the results provide managerial implications for developing responsible gambling strategies by considering gambling fallacy factors according to gambler types.
유희적 갬블러와 병적 갬블러간 게임동기⋅열정⋅감정상태⋅행동의도간 구조관계 분석
이충기,백기준 한국관광학회 2010 관광학연구 Vol.34 No.6
This study aimed to compare the structural relationships among gambling motivation, gambling passion, emotion, and behavioral intentions to gamble between recreation gamblers(RG) and pathological gamblers(PG). Data were collected from 200 recreational gamblers and 200 pathological gamblers who were selected purposively by a survey research agency on March 2010. The results from the structural equation modeling analysis indicated that there were significant effect of extrinsic motivations on obsessive passion for PG, and significant effect of intrinsic motivation on harmonious passion for RG. Further, PG showed strong effect of obsessive passion on negative emotion, whereas RG had significant effect of harmonious passion on positive emotion. It is interesting to note that behavioral intention was only determined by positive affective attitude(harmonious passion and positive emotion) for RG, while PG's behavioral intention was not determined by volitional process.
Examining Antecedents and Consequences of Gambling Passion: The Case of Gambling on Horse Races
이충기,백기준,David C. Hodgins,이태경 대한신경정신의학회 2013 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.10 No.4
Objective This study investigated the antecedents and consequences of gambling passion using structural equation modeling to examine relationships among gambling motivation, passion, emotion, and behavioral intentions in the horse racing industry. Methods An onsite survey was conducted with 447 patrons at a horseracing park in South Korea. A confirmatory factor analysis showed that the Gambling Passion Scale was valid and reliable, resulting in two sub-scales: obsessive passion (OP) and harmonious passion (HP). Results Study results indicated that extrinsic motivation influenced OP whereas intrinsic motivation significantly affected HP. Furthermore, OP was correlated with negative emotion, whereas HP was related to positive emotion. Gamblers' satisfaction was found to be influenced positively by positive emotion and negatively by negative emotion. Finally, satisfaction appeared to affect gamblers' behavioral intentions. Conclusion Study results echoed the notion of distinct and separate gambling motivations and passions among horse racing gamblers. Furthermore, results identified specific areas to which horse racing operators or policy makers should pay special attention in developing effective marketing strategies to promote responsible gambling.
