전쟁의 승리로 충분한가? 전후의 경제와 전쟁의 성공의 효과의 차이를 논하며

권력을 유지하려는 민주주의 정치 지도자에게는 무엇이 더 중요한가? 중요한 것이 무엇인가? 경제적 성공인가 아니면 전쟁의 성공인가? 국가의 지도자가 전쟁에서 승리하고 국가의 경제도 성공적으로 이끌 때, 대중은 지도자의 역량을 확인하게 되고 지도자는 정치적 생존을 확보할 수 있다. 그러므로 전쟁에서의 승리와 경제성과는 지도자가 지도자로서의 자격이 있는지를 대중에게 보여주는 신호역할을 한다. 하지만 이 둘 중에 무엇이 지도자의 정치적 미래에 더 중요한가? 본 연구는 서바이벌 모델과 Archigos를 이용하여 이를 알아보고자 한다. 본 연구 결과에 따르면, 전쟁에서의 승리와 만족스러운 경제회복은 상호보완적으로 지도자의 인기를 상승시키고 임기를 늘리게 된다. 하지만 민주주의사회에서 지도자에게는 경제 관리를 성공하지 않는 한 전쟁에서의 승리는 선거 성공에 도움이 되지 않는다. 따라서 만약 국내 경제의 성공과 전쟁의 성공을 비교 하자면 경제 부양이 지도자의 선거 성공과 생존에 더 중요한 요인임이 밝혀졌다. Which matters more to a democratic leader seeking to stay in power: Success in the economy or success in foreign policy? When a leader wins a war and manages the economy well, such successes not only confirm the competence of a leader to the public but also boost his/her political future. The war outcome and the economy are, thus, complementary signals of leader competence to the public. However, which one matters more? To test this, a series of the Cox proportional hazard model are employed. The data set, Archigos, includes key information on political leaders. The data analysis covers 2049 leaders of 166 countries during the period between 1919 and 1999. I find that while victory in war and the good economy at home contribute positively to the duration of postwar tenure, victory and the economy at are complementary signals of leader competency to the public. Thus, to democratic leaders victory alone is not beneficial unless they succeed in managing the economy at home as well. This, thus, suggests that the economy at home is a more dominant signal of leader competence to victorious leaders.
