이 연구는 스마트폰이라는 단일 매체 내에서 복수의 미디어 기능을 동시에 이용하는 수용자의 행동을 실증적 자료를 통해 분석하고 이를 미디어 멀티태스킹을 다룬 기존 이론체계와 연계시켜보려는 목적에서 출발했다. 이를 위해 이용자들이 스마트폰의 다양한 애플리케이션을 어떻게 조합하여 이용하는지를 사전조사와 본조사에서 수집된 경험적 자료를 통해 살펴봤다. 사전조사를 통해 총 354개의 멀티태스킹 앱 조합이 추출됐고 내용분석을 통해 55개 조합을 추려냈다. 본조사에서는 이 중 이용 빈도가 높은 22개 조합을 추출했는데 이들은 선행연구에서 얻어진 멀티태스킹 미디어 조합과 상당부분 유사한 것으로 밝혀져 스마트폰 앱이 기존매체 기능을 보완·대체한다는 선행연구 결과와 맥락이 이어짐을 볼 수 있었다. 아울러 인구학적·이용동기·이용자성향·이용조건 등 4개 차원의 17개 독립변인들이 스마트폰 앱 멀티태스킹 이용정도에 미치는 영향을 위계적 회귀분석을 통해 살펴봤다. 그 결과 대체로 나이가 어릴수록, 체면동기가 높을수록, 혁신성향·스마트폰 중독수준이 높을수록, 스마트폰에 다운로드 된 앱 개수가 많을수록, 데이터를 더 많이 제공하는 고가의 요금제일수록 스마트폰 앱 멀티태스킹을 더 많이 하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 특히 여성보다 남성이, 40대 이상보다는 20대가 스마트폰 앱 멀티태스킹을 더욱 빈번하게 한다는 점이 경험적으로 밝혀져 스마트폰 확산이 인터넷 중심의 디지털 격차와 마찬가지로 기존의 사회적 커뮤니케이션 격차를 축소하기보다는 더욱 확대할 개연성이 있음을 볼 수 있었다. This study focuses on the impact of various independent variables on smartphone application multitasking degrees. Also intends to discover smartphone application multitasking combinations mostly used by smartphone owners. Results from a survey of 266 college students and their parent who own smartphone are as follows: (1) Results revealed 55 smaptphone applictioan mulitasking combinations, and 22 most frequently used combinations. These multitaking combinations are very similar to media multitaksing combinations found by previous studies. This means that smartphone applications are the substitutes or supplements of the existing communication media. (2) Demographic variables such as sex and age, multimedia use motivation such as face-keeping/entertainment/socialization/information, user attributes such as media use skill/personal innovativeness/sensation-seeking/time management and smartphone addiction and smartphone use conditions such as numbers of applications downloaded on subjects’ smartphone/ use period/average smartphone use time per day/smarphone use plan/LTE or-not/display size influence smartphone application multitasking usage degrees. Based on this study"s findings, a direction for future studies is discussed.

휴대전화 이용이 대인커뮤니케이션 네트워크에 미치는 영향에 대한 한,미 비교연구: 대학생집단을 중심으로

This research explores how mobile phone use makes change on community members` interpersonal networks in both Korean and American societies focusing on both countries` college student populations. This work conducts a survey with 453 participants from both countries based on a purposive sampling method. Results indicate that mobile phones produce similar influences on both groups` interpersonal communication situations while generating modes yet significant differences. That is, mobile phone use within Korean college student group activates more internal communication within the intra group and reinforces the existing personal network`s connection(in-group), rather than expanding the range of interaction or contributing to freer communication patterns with diverse out-group members. This may contribute to maintaining the boundaries of internal and external groups compared to the American group.
