        Adverse Reactions to Protamine Sulfate used for Heparin Neutralization in a Dog Receiving a Blood Transfusion

        A 14-year-old castrated male ShihTzu diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) 6 months prior was referred to our clinic. The patient had been experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, poor appetite and hind limbs weakness. Hematology tests showed that he had a non-regenerative anemia. With aggressive treatment, the patient’s state had gotten worse. He showed ragged breath, vomiting blood and loss of consciousness temporarily. Hematocritmaintained low level. Gastric hemorrhage was strongly suspected by hematemesis. Whole blood transfusion was performed and heparin was used as an anticoagulant. Prior to transfusion, the blood cross matching between donor and patient was performed and the result was compatible. After the transfusion was stabilized, 1 mg of protamine sulfate for each 100 units of heparin was prepared and given intravenously over 3 minutes to reverse the effects of heparin. Immediately after protamine injection, the patient conducted severe anaphylactic shock. Protamine sulfate is used to reverse the anticoagulant action of heparin in dogs and humans. The adverse reaction of protamine sulfate range from mild reaction to fetal cardiac arrest. When sing protamine sulfate as heparin neutralization, it can lead to the death of a patient cause of anaphylactic shock. For this reason, the protamine sulfate should be injected slowly with antihistamine and the clinician should carefully monitor patients.

        Ex vivo Boosted Immune Cell Therapy for Canine Hepatic Disease

        A 12-year-old male American Cocker Spaniel was diagnosed with a type of chronic hepatits (CH) called cholangioheaptits. Routine supportive medication was administered to the patient, and ex vivo boosted immune cell (EBI-C) therapy was used for the treatment. A histopathologic examination of the liver 19 months later revealed that the cholangiohepatitis had progressed to cholangiocarcinoma. The medication and immune cell therapy was maintained. Two months after the new diagnosis, the patient’s state worsened, and the dog died 635 days after the first visit. EBI-C therapy is a type of immunotherapy, where immune cells are isolated from the patient’s peripheral blood mononuclear cells, expanded ex vivo, and then infused into the patient intravenously every two weeks. EBI-Cs (mean: 2.78 × 108 cells) were obtained 38 times and infused every two weeks. Most EBI-C were T-lymphocytes (99.24% of total EBI cells). T-lymphocytes produce large interferon (IFN)-γ, and IFN-γ inhibits liver fibrosis in dogs with CH. Moreover, in bile duct cancer, an increase in T-lymphocytes correlates with decreasing tumor invasion and metastasis. Thus, we propose that EBI-C therapy is applicable as a new supportive therapy for canine liver disease if other treatments like drug medication, surgery, or radiation are unavailable.

        노작학습 프로그램이 초등학생의 사회성 발달에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study is to verify the hypothesis that the laborious working learning program may bring a positive change in elementary students’ sociality. For this purpose, the laborious working learning programs was designed and the sociality test tool was developed. In the sociality tool, sociality was divided into seven sub-factors - diligence, sociability, independence, law‐abiding, responsibility, cooperation and sympathetic understanding. In order to examine the effects of the laborious working learning programs. we selected two 5th‐grade classes, one for the experimental group and the other for the control group, in Songrim Elementary School in Incheon, and applied the program to the experimental group for three months but not to the control group. After the application of the laborious working learning programs, it was performed a post test to verify the effect of the program. The experimental data were analyzed by using SPSSWIN 11.0 statistics package. In this study mainly used statistical technique was t-test. The significance level was set as .05. The major finding of this study are summarized as follows. First, analysis of the trial behavior score and the terminal behavior score of experimental group showed that significant differences were observed in all the sub-factors except responsibility. In addition, the difference in the mean score of sociality between the pretest and the posttest was also statistically significant. Second, after the application of the program, the terminal behavior score between experimental group and control group have significant differences in the sub-factors of sociality except responsibility. And the mean score of sociality between experimental group and control group have significant differences, too. This suggests that the laborious working learning programs applied to elementary students has a positive effect on their sociality.

        The Activity of Apo-transferrin on the Growth of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius

        Apo-transferrin is an iron-binding protein that has been reported to have an antimicrobial effect. It is considered a major component of the host defense mechanism as it limits microbial access to iron. This study was performed to investigate whether bovine apo-transferrin would have an inhibitory effect on the growth of S. pseudintermedius, which is one of the most isolated bacteria from dogs, and to compare the antimicrobial efficacy with bovine holo-transferrin. S. pseudintermedius were grown at 37oC in 96-well culture plates using Muller Hinton broth containing bovine apo-transferrin or bovine holo-transferrin at concentrations ranging from 0.5 or 2.5 to 5.0 mg/ml. The optical densities of the wells were then measured at 570 nm. In this study, the apo-transferrin showed dosedependent antimicrobial effect against S. pseudintermedius while holo-transferrin did not inhibit the growth of S. pseudintermedius effectively. The results suggest that iron deprivation is an important pathway for inhibiting bacterial growth and bovine apo-transferrin has great antimicrobial effects against S. pseudintermedius.

        In vitro Antimicrobial Effects of Silver Nanoparticles on Microorganisms Isolated from Dog with Otitis External

        Silver nanoparticles have marked antimicrobial effects on several pathogens and have been used to control bacterial growth in humans. In the present study, we evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of silver nanoparticles against the common causative pathogens of canine otitis external through counting of colony forming units. Silver nanoparticles showed significant dose-dependent antimicrobial effects on pathogens. In addition, we conducted antimicrobial susceptibility tests and compared the antimicrobial efficacy of silver nanoparticles. Microorganisms with a high resistance to antibiotics were also resistant silver nanoparticle with low concentration (5 μg/mL). However, in high concentration (15 μg/mL), almost 100% reduction in the number of CFUs of these pathogens was observed.

      • 그림자료가 지적장애아동의 어휘다양도와 언어능력에 미치는 효과

        이 연구는 지적장애아동을 대상으로 시각자료인 그림을 활용하여 어휘의 다양도와 언어능력에 미치는 효과를 알아보기 위함이었다. 이 연구에 참여한 3명의 지적장애아동의 생활연령은 8세 전후이며, 지능지수는 40에서 53에 해당하고 있다. 또한 수용언어와 표현언어 능력은 약 3년 정도 지체되어 있다. 이 연구의 설계는 전후검사 방법이며, 연구 기간은 2개월이었다. 언어능력을 알아보기 위한 도구는 취학전 아동의 수용언어 및 표현언어 척도(PRES)를 사용하였고, 어휘다양도를 알아보기 위해서는 어휘다. 양도(Type-Token Ratio; TTR) 검사 방법을 적용하였다. 이 연구의 그림자료는 PPVT(Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test)-R(Lloyd et al, 1981)을 근거로 총 112문항으로 구성하였다. 또한 명사와 동사카드는 아동의 어휘발달에 기초한 총 308가지의 다양한 어휘를 동작그림으로 표현한 동사카드이다. 이 연구에서는 그림자료 활용이 지적장애아동의 어휘다양도와 언어의 수용과 표현 능력에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤음을 제시하였다. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the effects of picture-data to improve the vocabulary variety and language ability for mental retarded children. This study is made up of before and after steps to investigate the effects that using picture-datum have influence on language ability of mental retardation children. The result of language instruction by picture-datum, it have been improved about 6 month-old~1 year-old level that accommodation language and expression language, type-token ratio of mental retardation children. Because of that, I want to investigate picture-datum more and suggest the basis of developing and using picture-datum in language instruction

        Efficacy of Enrofloxacin and Silver Sulfadiaznine Topical Otic Suspension for the Treatment of Canine Otitis Externa

        The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo and in vitro efficacy of enrofloxacin-silver sulfadiazine (Baytril® otic, Bayer, USA) for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs. Twenty-four dogs with otitis externa were included in this double-blinded, randomized study. The experimental group was treated with the Baytril® otic and the distilled water was applied to the control group. Both groups were administered each solution twice daily for 7 days and next 7 days off treatment. On days 0, 7 and 14, clinical signs, bacteriological and fungal counts were graded using semiquantitative scales, respectively. For the evaluation of in vitro efficacy of Baytril® otic, we also performed Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test by agar dilution method against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Malassezia pachydermatis. In the experimental group, the sum of clinical scores was decreased 81.0%and microbial scores were significantly reduced 87.0% at days 14, compared with day 0. The results of MIC testing were showed the concentration of enrofloxacin and silver sulfadiazine in Baytril® otic is high enough to kill for 3infectious agents. No adverse reactions were observed in any of the dogs during this study. These results suggest that Baytril® otic are efficient and safe treatment for canine otitis externa.

        Application of a Cyclooxygenase Inhibitor and Itraconazole for Pulmonary Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Dog

        A dog with anorexia, cough, and regurgitation was referred to clinic. Diagnostic imaging revealed a solitary mass involving the right cranial and middle lung lobes, compression of the cranial vena cava, and deviation of the heart and mediastinum toward the left side because the mass. The mass was diagnosed as a squamous cell carcinoma via fine needle aspiration. Ten days later, the tumor was larger and the clinical signs were more severe. A combination of piroxicam and itraconazole was administered to control the mass. Two weeks after initiating this treatment, the tumor size decreased and the clinical signs improved significantly.

        순환 행렬과 eIRA 부호를 이용한 효율적인 LDPC 부호화기 설계

        랜덤하게 생성된 LDPC 부호의 경우 부호화기의 복잡도가 크기 때문에 효과적인 부호화를 위하여 구조적인 설계를 필요로 한다. 본 논문에서는 효율적인 부호화기를 위해 기존에 제안된 eIRA 부호에 순환 행렬의 구조를 적용한 부호화기 구조를 제안하였다. 제안된 순환 행렬 구조는 쉬프트 레지스터를 사용하여 부호화기를 구성할 수 있으며, 순환 행렬의 사용으로 인한 성능 저하를 방지하기 위해 치환 행렬 구조에 해당하는 인터리버를 사용하였다. 제안된 부호는 LDPC 부호화기의 복잡도는 낮추면서도 기존의 부호화기의 성능과 유사한 성능을 보인다. In this paper, we concentrate on reducing the complexity for efficient encoder. We design structural LDPC code using circulant matrix and permutation matrix and eIRA code. It is possible to design low complex encoder by using shift register and differential encoder and interleaver than general LDPC encoder that use matrix multiplication operation. The code designed by this structure shows similar performance as random code. And the proposed codes can considerably reduce a number of XOR gates.

        Botulinum Toxin Injection before Surgical Intervention in a Dog with Cricopharyngeal Achalasia

        A 6-month-old castrated male poodle presented with a cough, dysphagia, and regurgitation. Cricopharyngealachalasia (CPA) was diagnosed by clinical history and a fluoroscopic examination. The animal received a botulinumtoxin (BTX) injection but symptoms had not resolved by three days after injection. Thus, a cricopharyngeal andthyropharyngeal muscle myotomy was performed and immediately the clinical signs resolved. This report describessuccessful correction of CPA with myotomy after failure of BTX injection in a dog.
