Vol.15 No.1

This document provides the problems caused by the lack of mandatory requirements for periodical survey on Ship Security Alert System(SSAS) under SOLAS CH.XI-2 and proposes that the periodical survey of SSAS should be conducted by radio inspectors in conjunction with the survey of the radio installations.

      • A Bird's Images in James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Vol.14 No.-

James Joyce(1882-1941) uses various forms of images throughout his works. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, he disposes symbolically the bird's images such as an eagle, a turkey, a dove, a swallow, a bat, a hawk, a peacock, a swan, a crane, a rested ibis, and Troth. Especially, there comes to appear Heron who is Stephen's classmate as a bird's name. The bird's images are changed and associated with the other images such as moocow, water, and fire. The myth of Daedalus is greatly related with the wings, that is, the bird image. Daedalus fashions wings for himself and for Icarus in order to escape from a prison and return home. Daedalus's work violates the laws of nature through the accomplishment of a feat seemingly beyond human possibility. The result also includes the death of Icarus, an apparently unaboidable concomitant of the mature artist's act of making in order to escape. The image of flight suggests the freedom he must have, but its emphasis is not entirely upon escape. The flight of Daedalus is not only an escape but a widening of consciousness, an investigation of the unknown, as Joyce reminds us by quoting on his first page Ovid's line. Ovid's Metamorphoses, Ⅷ, 188 quoted as the epigraph "Et ignotas animum dimittit in artes"(And he sent his mind to the unknown arts) refers to the mythic artist Daedalus, the "Old father, old artificer" mentioned at the end of Stephen's journal. Ovid presents Daedalus setting his mind to work upon unknown arts. The images of flight relates freedom, increasing perception, and creativity. To observe as to how the bird's images are related with the growth and development of Stephen Dedalus is to be interesting.
