1950s American Ideology Witch Hunt and Art Censorship: Case of Black Celebrity Actor Paul Robeson

Vol.54 No.-

The 1950s was a period of ‘Great Expectations’ for the United States, both politically and economically. Faced with a new phase of the world order called the Cold War, the US replaced Britain’s glory and position in the past and emerged as a representative and real power of Western Democracy. In addition, the 1950s was one of the longest periods of sustained economic growth in the US history. Accordingly, American citizens had a growing sense of pride that they ‘were’ the members of the world’s strongest and wealthiest nation. The 1950s is remembered as one of the best times in American history, and such optimistic sentiments were confirmed in the realms of reality as well as mass media of television dramas and magazines. On the other hand, American citizens turned into a silent generation insensitive to the problems in reality, and the United States turned to a conservative society dominated by the anti-Communist ideology of McCarthyism. In this regard, the 1950s America also tells a different story. This decade was the worst time for an American citizen Paul Robeson (1898-1976) who was a celebrity actor and activist. In the 1950s, this public figure met a reversal of fate especially in the face of the prevailing anti-Communist sentiment. His passport was cancelled, and this ‘American’ celebrity was classified as an ‘Un-American’ reactionary. This paper traces the case of racial and art censorship brought by American political ideology in the 1950s, focusing on the personal history of the African American artist Paul Robeson.

Vol.26 No.2

The Korean Society for Teaching English Literature (KSTEL), founded in August 1992, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year in 2022. At this point, it will be meaningful to look back and reflect on the past journey of KSTEL and to anticipate and prepare for the future. For this purpose, ‘archiving’ academic achievements of KSTEL so far is a course that must be taken in preparation for the future, and will be a necessary step at this moment of time when the past and the present meet and, at the same time, the present encounters the future. This paper aims to survey the ‘English drama education’ articles published in The Journal of Teaching English Literature of KSTEL from the first issue in 1996 to the 2021 winter issue, and to track changes and trends in pedagogy as well as research methodology and themes during the period. In addition, while commemorating the 30th anniversary of KSTEL, it also intends to serve the purpose of ‘archiving’ the scholarly research and achievements in English drama education papers published in The Journal of Teaching English Literature, as a work of looking back on the past journey of KSTEL and subsequently creating a map for future travel.

Vol.52 No.1

Hanay Geiogamah’s play Foghorn (1973) is in many ways opposite to the early American Indian dramas produced by white playwrights. The play is written by a Native American writer, thereby consciously projecting the Native American subjectivity and perspective. Consequently, American Indian characters in the play are free from the tragic fate of death. Foghorn traces on stage the painful history of Native Americans that has been continuing for centuries since Columbus’ discovery of the New World. With the historical moments being recalled to the present, the theatrical device and motif of ‘playful provocation’ consistently dominates the play and serves as key strategy to drive the distinction of Foghorn from the literary tradition of ‘tragic Indian’ established by white writers. By exploring the mechanism in which Native Americans’ resistance to white supremacy is maneuvered through the playful provocation strategy, this study claims that Geiogamah attempts to regain the Native American subjectivity as the ‘original owner’ of America, which has long been lost and subsequently forgotten as absent.

Vol.31 No.6

In this paper we propose a method for measuring the shear modulus of an ultrasound soft tissue phantom using an acoustic radiation force. The proposed method quantitatively determines the shear modulus based on the rise time of a displacement induced by an acoustic radiation force at the focal point of a focused ultrasound beam. The shear wave speed and shear modulus obtained from the proposed method and a shear wave propagation method were compared to verify the validity of the proposed method. In the shear wave propagation method, the shear modulus is first computed by measuring the propagating speed of a shear wave induced in a phantom by a limited-diffraction transmit field, and then was compared to that obtained with the proposed method in an ultrasound data acquisition system calibrated based on the first computed shear modulus. The relative errors between the two methods were found to be 4% for shear wave speed and less than 9% for shear modulus, confirming the usefulness of the proposed method.

Vol.24 No.5

Sonoelastography is an ultrasound-based technique that visualizes the elastic properties of soft tissues by measuring the tissue motion generated by an externally applied vibration. In this paper. the characteristics of wave generation in soft tissues due to an acoustic vibrator are studied. The effects of modal patterns on the detectability of lesions such as tumors in senoelastography are also investigated These are accomplished by analyzing the vibration patterns calculated using theoretical equations and finite element methods in halt space, infinite plate. and finite-sized tissue. A finite-width source generates shear waves with large amplitude Propagating in specific directions. and the generation characteristics depend both on the width and frequency of the vibrator. as well as the distance from it. It is shown in a finite-sized tissue that the lesion detection in displacement images is quit dependent on the modal patterns inside tissue. In contrast it Is also found that the lesion detectability in strain images is less dependent on the modal Patterns and is much better than that in displacement images.

Vol.29 No.-

Shakespeare's King Lear covers a wide scope of themes presenting profound human realities, which makes it difficult to make a clear interpretation of the play and the playwright's intention. Moreover, considering that Shakespeare's texts are fundamentally a script for stage production rather than a literature for reading, the interpretation or appreciation of King Lear undeniably depends on the so-called extra-verbal dimension of the text. Ultimately the authentic approach to the maxim of the Shakespearean text demands for the reciprocal action between what is said in the text and what is seen on stage. In this respect, the concept of what Philip McGuire says 'open silence' is suggestive in both demanding and justifying the necessity of multi-dimensional as approaching tool for Shakespearean study. According to McGuire, Shakespearean text calls attention to the importance of theatrical dimension what is not voiced or silenced by the words in the play text, and therefore requires multi-dimensional reading between verbal and extra-verbal aspects. The opening scene of King Lear suggests a good example of such possibility of open meaning in that the meaning of Lear's declaration of his 'darker purpose' is open depending on the context actually visualized or constructed on stage, especially around the map Lear orders to be brought, and depending on the status of the map itself, symbolic projection of Lear: how it is carried in, where it is located, what shape it has. The interpretation of Lear's dark purpose and the map is also crucial to tell the physical and mental status of Lear and his kingdom, and also predict the meaning of the ending of the play, in terms of political order set up after the old king's death. In case of the 1971 film edition King Lear Peter Brook directed, the map is described as having already been on stage in the opening scene, and the wilderness and primitiveness of its appearance shows that choas and disorder is epidemic in Lear's world, delivering the feeling of loss of community. Also the picture portrayed in the opening scene promise no hope of rehabilitation or reestablishment or political order in the future of Lear's world, which touches on the historical reality of the British Empire what has been losing her power and prosperity since the second World War up to the 1970s.
