『和國志』는 일본에 관한 총체적 내용을 담은 백과사전적 문헌으로서 독보적 가치를 지닌다. 이 책은 1764년의 제11차 통신사행 때 서기로 수행했던 元重擧에 의해 저술된 것으로서 일본의 문화 전반에 걸쳐 자료를 수집하여 엮고 논평을 붙였다. 원중거는 서얼로서 연암그룹의 일원이었다. 『화국지』에 나타난 원중거의 일본인식은 크게 세 관점으로 정리해 볼 수 있다. 華夷論的 관점에서는, 일본을 오랑캐로서 야만시하는 기존의 태도를 견지하면서도 새로운 변화상을 인정하였다. 성리학적 세계관을 고수하는 입장에서 바라본 일본의 문화는 야만적이다. 그러나 長碕의 서적이 유통됨으로 말미암아 文運이 흥기하는 사회상을 인정하고 문화발전의 가능성을 기대하였다. 역사적 관점에서는 일본의 자국중심적 역사기록의 허구성과 왜곡성을 지적하였으며, 우리나라와의 역사적 관계를 상고하며 와신상담과 경계를 촉구하였다. 일본에 대한 대응방식으로서는 거리를 두고 신중하게 대처하며 경계할 것을 제시하였다. 실용적 관점에서는 그들의 근면한 국민성과 생활상을 긍정적으로 평가하였으며, 특히 정교한 기술문화에 대해 세밀히 관찰하고 그 장점을 높이 평가하였다. 이는 선입견을 배제하고 객관적으로 일본인의 삶의 현장을 관찰한 것으로서 여기에는 그들의 우수한 문화를 수용하려는 태도가 드러나 있다. 이러한 관점들을 종합해 볼 때 『화국지』에 나타난 일본인식에는 보수와 개방의 양면성이 존재한다. 그들을 비루한 오랑캐로 인식하며 상대적으로 문화적 자부심을 느낌과 동시에, 변화상을 목격하고 발전가능성을 인정하며, 정교한 기술적 우수성을 파악하고 수용하려는 태도는 기존의 인식과 새로운 인식이 복합되어 있는 것이다. 이러한 경향은 당시 북학파의 진보성과 일맥상통하는 18세기 조선의 사상적 흐름이라고 할 수 있다. Hwagookji, an encyclopedic literature that covers Japan exhaustively, has a unique value in itself. It was written by Joong-Geo Won (1719-1790) who accompanied the 11th Trip of Communications Agents as a clerk in 1764, who collected, edited, and commented data ranging from geography to history and culture. The author, Joong-Geo Won, was an illegitimate child and was a member of Yeonam Group, the elite of the times. He was treated as the venerable elder among others during the interchange between Chosun and Japan. The perception about Japan, revealed in his book, Hwagookji, can be defined in three big perspectives. From the perspective of Hwaii (respecting China while rejecting barbarians), Chosun sticks to the extant view that belittles Japan as a barbarian but it admits Japan's changes. That is to say, from the Sung Confucianist outlook on the world, there is no manners, education, etc. in the Japanese culture. However, the circulation of Janggi's books makes Chosun admit Japan‘s change and prosperity in culture and expect the possibilities of cultural flourish. From the historical standpoint, Chosun points out the misrepresentation and distortion in Japan's self-centered records of history. In addition, it scrutinizes the relationship between Japan and itself, and urges sustained determination and perseverance with alertness. Therefore, the countermeasure against Japan was to cope with it prudently with precaution while keeping distance from it. The practical point of view positively evaluates the Japanese industrious nationality and way of living. In particular, this view takes a close stock of the exquisite technology and thinks highly of its strength. It shows the attitude to accept the merits of the Japanese, which observes the life of the Japanese with an objective look, excluding any prejudice. In sum, there is ambilaterality about understanding Japan, i.e., conservatism and progressivism, represented in Hwagookji. There is a mixture of the existing and novel recognitions in the attitude that sees Japan as an abject barbarian and keeps a relative self-esteem in culture while witnessing changes, acknowledging the possibilities of development, and trying to grasp and accept the excellence in delicate technology. This tendency has to do with the progressivism of Bookhak school in that era, and can be regarded as the ideological stream of the 18th-century Chosun.

동아시아 문화교류(文化交流)와 한국한문학(韓國漢文學) ; 원중거의 일본체험, 그 의의와 한계-『화국지』를 중심으로

1763년 제11차 계미사행의 서기 원중거가 저술한 『화국지』 는 그의 체험을 바탕으로 하여 일본에 관한 총체적 정보와 자료를 담고있다. 『화국지』 에 기술된 원중거의 일본 체험은 l8세기 후반 조선 선비의 사고와 사각을 드러내고 있는 바 본고에서는 그 의의와 한계를 고찰하였다. 의의있는 점은 새롭게 본 일본과 일본인에 관한 내용이다. 원중거는 대마도인과 내지인을 엄격하게 구별하면서 일본인에 대한 기존의 부정적 인식을 완화시키고 있다. 또한 일본의 우수한 기술문화와 文風이 홍기하는 변모상을 들어 일본을 더 이상 오랑캐로 야만시해선 안된다고 주장하였다. 조선보다 앞선 산업기술을 보유하여 물질문화가 발달한 나라 일본이,文風의 흥기로 말미암아 문명의 나라로 점점 성장해가는 면모를 바람직한 현상으로 파악한 것이다. 그러나 이러한 일본 바로알기에는 심각한 한계점을 드러내고 있다. 일본이 長기를 통해 아란타로부터 서양문물을 수입하여 국제화의 싹을 키우고 있는 상황에서, 원중거는 한중일 삼국의 유교문화권에 고착되어 서양세계에 대한 관심의 결여와 일본의 진정한 변모상황을 감지하지 못하는 한계를 드러내었다. 또한 일본의 儒學에 대한 진지한 탐구가 결여되어 있어서 성리학 일변도의 조선 선비 의 한계성이 드러나 있다. 『화국지』 에 기술된 원중거의 일본 체험은 使行 이 갖는 여건상의 한계로 말미암아 보다 깊이있는 탐구를 하지 못한 점이 있다. 『화국지』가 미래를 위한 것이면서 또한 미래지향적 전망이 부족한 데서 당시 조선이 놓여 있었던 국제적 위상을 읽을 수 있다. 『Hwagukji』 written by Junggeo, Won who is a clerk of the 11th Kyemisahaeng in 1763 includes the general information and materials for Japan based on the experience of writer. Won`s experience in Japan, included in 『Hwaguji』 expresses thought and view of Joseon`s classical scholar in the latter half of the 18th century and this paper considered the meaning and limitation. The content for Japan and Japanese, which is seen newly, is significant. Junggeo. Won relieves the existed negative awareness for Japanese by distinguishing Thusima people and insiders. And he observed and recorded Japanese culture of technology in detail and insisted that we must not consider Japan as barbarians anymore with transformation of Munpung recently. But, it includes the serious limitation for knowing Japan correctly with new sight. Although Japan seeds the bud of internationalization by importing the Western culture from Ahranta through Nagasaki. Japan. Junggeo, Won didn`t sense effects Japan was made by the West by setting in the Confucian culture of Korea, China and Japan. It means the limitation of Joseon`s classical scholar who didn`t keep up with international news.
