When it comes to development of electric vehicles(EV), much attention has been paid to the thermal management of batteries. The liquid cooling has been increasingly used instead of other cooling methods, such as air cooling and phase change material cooling. In this study, battery pack was used to designing suitable cooling plates for pouch type of battery. The numerical analysis was performed by variables : Inlet Temperature, Flow Rate of Coolant and 3 types of the cooling plate’s Channels. As the flow rate increased, the maximum temperature and average temperature were lowered, and New Model 2 was the most effective shape for decreasing battery’s maximum and average temperature. On the other hand, Pressure drop isn’t much considered as important things for cooling battery’s temperature. Therefore we optimized and focused on our designed channels of cooling plates how much dropped battery’s temperature degrees.
Numerical Analysis of Freezing Phenomena of Water around the Channel Tube of MF Evaporator

In this study, the process of freezing around two consecutively arranged channel tubes used for evaporator heat exchange was numerically investigated. Numerical results confirmed that the vortex occurred between the front channel and the rear channel and also that the vortex occurred due to the rapid change of the channel at the rear of the rear channel. These vortices were found to play a role in reducing the ice layer to some extent by the growth of the ice layer at the front and rear of the channel tube. The freezing layer showed a tendency to gradually increase as it passed through the channel pipe. As the wall temperature in the channel pipe decreased, the thickness of the freezing layer increased. As the flow rate of water slowed, the thickness of the freezing layer became thicker. In particular, in the case of a slow flow rate of 0.03 m/s, the freezing layers of the front channel pipe and the rear channel pipe were connected to each other. The narrower the channel, the thinner the freezing layer was in both the front and rear channel tubes. It is found that these thin freezing layers are caused by the low thickness of the temperature boundary layer formed around the channel tube.

The evaporator is a key driver of an air conditioning system’s efficiency. In this study, we study methods of maximizing the efficiency of a Massey Ferguson (MF) evaporator by measuring how the cooling performance of different shapes vary with temperature. We varied the tube insertion depth as well as the shape of the evaporator’s header and tube. When we compare header shapes of "D", "Ellipse", and "Quadrangle" types, we find that the elliptical header creates the smallest pressure loss and the highest temperature difference. Between tube shapes of "Rectangular", "Projection", and "Circular" types, the "Projection" type tube creates the most temperature difference. We also investigated the depth of tube insertion in the header and find that tube insertion of 5 - 10 mm is feasible; we selected the depths of 5, 7, and 10 mm since they corresponded to approximately 30%, 50%, and 70% of the total width of the header. The tube insertion test demonstrated that a tube insertion depth of 7 mm creates the least pressure loss and the highest temperature difference. In conclusion, the optimal evaporator design uses an "Ellipse" type header, "Projection" type tube, and a tube insertion depth between 30 and 50% of the header width.

The improvement in the battery performance and life using a battery thermal management system directly affects the improvement in the performance, life, and energy efficiency of electric vehicles. Therefore, this study numerically analyzed the heat exchange processes between the coolant inside the cooling plate channel and the heat generated by the battery. The cooling performance was analyzed based on the average temperature, temperature uniformity, and the maximum and minimum temperature differences of the battery. A performance difference existed depending on the coolant inlet temperature but showed the same tendency of cooling performance according to the shape of each plate's channel. Type 1 showed the best results in terms of battery temperature uniformity, which is the most important measure of battery performance; Type 2 showed the best results in terms of the average temperature of the battery; and Type 3 showed the best results in terms of the maximum and minimum temperature differences of the battery compared with that of the other cooling plates.
