Filtration studies, using simulated test nanoparticles or diesel nanoparticles, have been performed about Inconel foam filters for DPF combined with electrostatic precipitation. The simulated test particles were synthesized by laser ablation in the nitrogen atmosphere at the standard condition. The diesel particles were exhausted from the diesel engine driven on the condition of idle or load mode. Filtration efficiency of the metal foam filter is very low because most of particles are penetrated through the large pores of filter. However, the efficiency was considerably improved by applying the electric field to the filter and/or charging the nanoparticles. Nevertheless, the pressure drop of filter hardly increased because the filter-pores were not clogged by deposited particles and kept open.

Computational studies have been performed to analyze the particle loadings onto the filters according to the different inflow pattern of dusty gas and the flow uniformities on the filter surface of back-blown gas at different permeability of porous media setup at the filter outlet. This is preliminary study to find how we can reduce the regeneration time and improve the regeneration efficiency of filters with dust layer.

Computational simulation has been performed to design the filtration system for Korea model IGCC demonstration plant. The filtration system for optimal design has four effective filters corresponding to the clusters composed of a group of ceramic candle filters. It was analyzed how the different entrance geometry influences the flow field and the particle behavior in the filtration system. The particle loading is minimum when the gas mixed with particles flows into the filter vessel with a shroud tube through a tangential inlet. However, the particle loading is maximum when the gas with particles enters the filter vessel through a normal inlet which a entrance tube extended from. By controling adequately both conditions of inflow, the filtration system can be operated optimally to prolong the filter life-time and to save the energy for cleaning filters.

A new bag filter system has been developed with tangential inlet and an inner tube. Computational simulation was performed to suggest an optimum shape of the inner tube which might decrease the loading onto bag filter surface of the particles entering a filter vessel and the reentrainment of particles from the bottom wall of the vessel. According to the computational results, the particle loading onto the bag filter was reduced by obstructing particles moving directly from the near wall of the vessel to bag filters when an inner tube was located around the bag filters. The particle loading was lower when an inner tube covered around the lower part of the bag filters from the turbulent slow recirculating near the vessel wall as the upper part of filters was not covered. Also, the reentrainment of particles from the bottom wall decreased with an inner tube covering around the lower part of filters.

Filtration studies have been performed about Inconel foam filters for DPF combined with electrostatic precipitation. Filtration efficiency of the metal foam filter is very low because that have large pores. However, the efficiency is considerably improved by appling the electric field to the filter without the significant increase of pressure drop. This is because the pores of the filter are not clogged by deposited particles and kept open. Most of particles are collected when they are charged by corona current. When high voltage is applied to the filter without the corona current, the filtration efficiency is higher as the pore size increases and is lower and higher (has a minimum value) as filtration velocity increases.

IGCC (석탄가스화 복합발전) 시스템 공정 중 가스화기에서 발생되는 합성가스 내에는 높은 농도의 분진들이 함유되어 있기 때문에 하부 공정들을 보호하기 위해서는 가스화기 후단에 집진장치가 필히 설치되어야 한다. 집진장치의 설계 제작 운전에 있어서 점착성 분진층 부착,분진 브리징, 필터 파손 현상 등과 같은 다양한 문제점들로 인하여 고온의 합성가스를 처리하는 데는 아직 기술적 한계들이 산재해 있는 상황이다. 이와 같은 문제점들은 필터에 부착된 분진층의 탈진성능을 향상시키거나, 필터의 열피로를 줄일 수 있도록 필터 재생을 위한 탈진의 횟수를 줄이는 방법을 통하여 해결될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 파일롯 규모의 IGCC용 세라믹캔들필터 집진장치에서의 가스 유입 및 탈진 조건에 따른 집진장치의 차압 특성 변화를 수치해석과 실험을 통하여 분석함으로써 탈진성능을 향상시킬 수 있는 조건과 탈진 횟수를 최소화시킬 수 있는 방안을 도출하고자 하였다.
