이 책은 “촛불시대에 다시 생각하는 레닌과 러시아혁명”이라는 주제로 2008년 7월 8일에 열린 학술 심포지엄에서 발표된 논문 세 편, 토론문, 그리고 레닌에 관한 독자적인 논문 세 편 등 3부로 구성되어 있다. 본 서평은 특히 레닌 사상의 현재적 의미를 살펴본 1부와 2부에 초점을 맞춰 작성되었다. 우선 발표된 세 논문은 레닌의 혁명사상을 각각 외부성, 제헌권력, 소비에트 민주주의라는 관점에서 살펴보면서 레닌의 사유가 불철저했다고, 시대가 변화했기 때문에 그 내용이 새롭게 규정되어야 한다고, 그리고 소비에트 민주주의, 즉 반자유주의적 민주주의의 주창자로서 레닌을 계승하고 발전시켜야 한다고 주장한다. 하지만 이런 논지 전개의 중심에 놓여있는 외부성, 제헌권력 등의 개념 자체가 상당히 모호하며, 때로는 레닌의 사상을 지나치게 자의적으로 해석하며, 레닌 사상의 특정 측면을 서로 상반되게 파악하기도 하며, 각 논문의 논지가 서로 충돌하는 모습을 보여주기도 한다. 이 책의 여러 글들은, 비록 이런 취약점을 지녔을지라도, 서로의 부족한 부분들을 보완해주면서 촛불시대의 ‘혁명’이 제기하는 중요한 문제들을 레닌의 사상과 러시아혁명의 경험에 비춰 살펴보려고 시도함으로써 새로운 시사점을 던져준다 This book is made up of the three sections: three papers presented to the academic symposium “Rethinking Lenin and the Russian Revolution in the period of the Candlelight Protest” held on 8 July 2008, the debates in the symposium, and the separate articles on Lenin. In this book review the focus is put on the first and second sections. The three papers in the first section deal with the externality, the constituent power, and the Soviet democratism irrespectively. The first paper asserts that Lenin’s thought was not consistent enough. The second one maintains that due to the lapse of time the content of Leninism should be redefined anew. The third one argues that Lenin should be succeeded as an advocator of the anti-liberal democratism. However, such main notions as the externality and the constituent power are far from being clear. Moreover, there are some arbitrary interpretations of Lenin’s thought, the inconsistency in the understanding of some aspects of Leninism, and sometimes the conflict between the arguments of the papers. Despite such shortcomings, the papers and articles makes up for the weak points mutually. The principal virtue of this book lies in searches for the possibilities of a new revolution on the basis of the reappraisal of Lenin’s thought and the experiences of the Russian Revolution.
