Objective of this study was to characterize PM10 sources on subway tunnels and development of simple particulate matters measuring device based on wireless sensor network. A new wireless sensor module PMX has been designed and manufactured to measure PM10 and PM2.5 simultaneously. The measurements have been conducted at a specific subway station on the Seoul metro line. The accuracy of the device was verified and compared with commercial measuring device based on weighting method.

The emergence of sensor networks as one of the dominant technology trends in the coming decades. These networks are likely to be composed of hundreds, and potentially thousands of tiny sensor nodes, functioning autonomously, and in many cases, without access to renewable energy resources. Cost constraints and the need for ubiquitous, invisible deployments will result in small sized, resource-constrained sensor nodes. Ubiquitous sensor network(USN) module with 4 kinds of air quality monitoring sensors was developed for indoor environment monitoring system in subway stations. The module has various enlargement for various kinds of sensors such as temperature sensor, humidity sensor, CO₂ sensor, particulate sensor. To reduce the measurement error of sensors, we calibrated each sensor using standard gases and particles. The development wireless node is very convenient to be installed in the subway stations. USN is expected to be used for the cheap and easy way for indoor air quality monitoring.

In this study, it was suggested how to monitor the air quality with use of intelligent wireless sensor network in the subway station. When Zigbee-based ubiquitous sensor network was used, smaller budget was required in configuring the system compared to existing air-quality monitoring method and this system may easily be configured due to easy installation of communication cables. The study will be continued to supplement the network systems currently installed in subway stations and the completion of development of this system is expected to make a large contribution in improvement of indoor air quality.
Fuel Activation Device (FAD)를 이용한 엔진에서 배출되는 입자상물질의 저감 방안 연구

본 논문에서는 몽골철도국의 협조를 받아 몽골 울란바타르-초이르 238 km 구간에서 엔진 연료 미립화 장치인 FAD를 상업 운행하는 디젤기관차에 장착하여 미세먼지 및 black carbon 등 입자상물질의 저감효과를 파악하고자 하였다. FAD를 장착하기 전 PM10 기준으로 22.9 mg/㎥ 수준의 미세먼지가 배출되었으며, black carbon의 경우 8.7 mg/㎥으로 고농도로 배출되는 것을 확인하였다. FAD를 장착한 후 효율실험을 통해 FAD의 장착으로 미세먼지의 68 %, black carbon의 28 %가 저감되는 것을 확인하였다.

As the standard of living is higher, the passengers using public transportations desire better qualities of environment as well as more comfortable indoor environment. In case of train, the passengers’ comfort in passenger cabin is one of the most important elements to be competitive with other transport systems. The indoor air quality of the cabin should be managed properly, because many passengers travel for a long time in the small space of 144 ㎥. For proper management of the air quality, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is required for the ventilation of the compartment. To maintain comfortable environment in the compartment, the automatic ventilation system is needed to exchange the indoor air with fresh air or clean indoor air. In this study, we investigated the indoor air quality (PM-10, CO₂, and VOCs) in the compartment of train. In addition, type and pattern of PM-10 has been analyzed through the clustering analysis. Based on the analysis, we could found that the fine particulate matters in the compartment can be a serious hazard to human. To control the concentration of PM-10 and CO₂ air cleaners were developed. Through this study, it is expected that people who take a train will be in a more comfortable environment.

Biomass burning is a source of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Under the ideal conditions of complete combustion, the burning of biomass produces carbon dioxide and water vapor. Since complete combustion is not achieved under any conditions of biomass burning, other carbon species, including carbon monoxide, methane, non-methane hydrocarbons and particulate carbon are produced. In this study, we analyze the combustion characteristics of rice-husk, such as heat release rate, smoke production rate, the percentage variation of CO and CO₂, oxygen consumption rate, and mass loss under different heat fluxes (20, 50 and 70㎾). As a result, at 20㎾ incomplete combustion is occurred so that the percentage of CO is high in initial burning and total smoke release is higher than the others. At 50㎾ and 70㎾, the combustion behaviors is very similar except the variation of CO percentage.

The physical treatment such as chemical precipitation or adsorption was usually added after biological treatment in wastewater treatment process since it was enforced to reduce the concentration of phosphate for wastewater effluent to 0.2 mg/L as P which was well known as one of main nutrient causing eutrophication in waterbody. Therefore, the new material functioned for both adsorption and disinfection was prepared with Fe and Cu, and $TiO_2$, respectively, by changing the ratio of concentration referred to tri-metal (TM). According to SEM-EDS, $TiO_2$ was 30~40% composition for any TM regardless of any synthesis condition. However, the ratio of composition for Fe and Cu was dependent on the initial Fe and Cu concentration, respectively. The removal efficiency of phosphate was obtained to 15% at low initial concentration and the maximum uptake (Q) was calculated to ~11 mg/g through Langmuir isotherm model using TM1 which was synthesized at 1000 mg/L, 1000 mg/L, and 2 g (10 g/L) for $Fe(NO_3)_3$, $Cu(NO_3)_2$, $TiO_2$, respectively. In disinfection test, the efficiency of virus removal using TM was increased with increase of dosage of TM and can be reached 98% at 0.2 g.
외기 미세먼지와 탑승객수에 따른 객실 PM10 농도변화 연구

Indoor air quality in public transportation such as railway, subway and bus is hard to control because of spatial restrict and variation of passenger"s number. On January 2007, The Ministry of Environment announced "the guideline of indoor air quality in public transportation" for the concentration managements of particulate matter and carbon dioxide. In this study, we measured the PM10 concentration inside the Mugunghwa-ho passenger cabin and outdoor air and counted passengers. By the statistical analysis using SigmaPlot 2001 and SPSS 13.0, we found that indoor PM10 concentration is significantly affected by outdoor air. It is suggested that the air quality of inflow to the passenger cabin for air exchange must be controlled to support the indoor environment comfortably.
