The purpose of this thesis is to find out the differences between the Western and Korean plays that we commonly encounter in the development process and the common or unique characteristics that result from them. Therefore, we want to find out the origin of performing arts that we recognize as the 'traditional performing arts' in modern times, and what types of influences we have on the different backgrounds, aspects, prongs, and mutual ways in which those types of performing arts emerged. In order to do so, the mid-Joseon and late Joseon period, in which the art of performing modern traditional plays developed rapidly, was chosen as the period of study of the thesis. In this thesis, we will look first at the background in which the performing arts were created and developed in terms of political, economic, social, and cultural aspects. As a clear example, we will deal with various items including Sandae-nori derived and developed from Yeonhui in the royal court, Sadangpae which grew and collapsed in connection with a temple, Namsadangpae which was built entirely on Sadangpae, Sodongpae developed around Durae based on agricultural culture, and Pansori which was connected with a novel and developed a type of musical-play. In this flow, we could see a distinct difference in the way in which different aspects of the Western history exist, and in defining them there is a need for independent identification. Therefore, I expect the difference to be clearly defined through the representative examples shown above.
