When evaluating the dentofacial changes that occur as a result of growth or treatment, orthodontists are interested in observing specific areas of alterations. As a result, cephalometric superimposition involve the evaluation of change in the overall face, in the maxilla and its dentition, in the mandible and its dentition, amount and direction of condylar growth and mandibular rotation. The method of superimposition vary according to structures used as references within the skull. Cephalograms were superimposed according to the four methods : ⑴ structural method, ⑵ superimposition on SN line, registerd at S point, ⑶ superimposition on registration - point R with Bolton - nasion planes parallel, and ⑷ superimposition on basion - nasion, registered at point CC. The superimposition methode differ according to reference structures used within the skull. To evaluate facial changes, such structures must be relatively stable over time and located outside the face itself. Unlike the facial skeleton, the cranial base grows rapidly in early postnatal life, reaching 90% of its full size by 4 to 5 years of age. For this reason, the cranial base is considered a satisfactory reference four cephalmetric superimpositions. But, the cranial base is consisted of frontal bone, sphenoidal bone, occipital bone and symphysis, and growth of its structures are difference. Therefore, structural method, which is used fast full growth and most stable structure, may be considered more exact and reliable superimposition method.

Since Broadbent, lateral cephalometric radiographs have been popularized as one of the most important diagnostic data. In case of asymmetric patients, however, lateral cephalometric radiographs can't give useful information because it just depends on sagittal and vertical analysis. While posteroanterior cephalometric radiographs can give useful information to us especially in case of vertical growth difference or lateral deviation and help making STO. Because appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan are very important in orthodontic treatment, clinician should pay more attention to use it for asymmetric patients.

Superimposition of serial cephalometric radiographs has been an invaluable tool for the orthodontist in evaluating growth & the interaction of mechanotherapy. A number of methods for superimpositioning the maxillary structures have been suggested. But, the determination of the best method for maxillary superimposition has been problematic because of the difficulity in identifyling stable anatomic landmarks. The various methods of maxillary superimpositions that use either the palatal plane between the ANS & PNS or the best fit on the maxilla are compromised by the remodelling of the palatal shelves. It has been shown that the hard palate undergo continuous resorption its nasal surface and apposition on the oral side, making most of these methods of superimposition unsatisfactory. Furthermore, registration on either ANS & PNS should be avoided, since both these structures are known to undergo significant anteroposterior remodelling. On the other hand, Bjork & Skieller using implants, suggested the use of a structural method of superimposition in order to evaluate maxillary growth & treatment change. With this approach, the tracings are superimposed on the ant. contour of zygomatic process of maxilla, which shows relative stability after the age of eight. The second film is oriented so that the resorptive lowering of the nasal floor equal to the apposition at the orbital floor. So this method is recommended for growing children to evaluate growth & treatment result.

The orthodontic response to mechanotherapy has historically been measured from lateral cephalograms with maxillary and mandibular superimpositions. It is believed that by superimposing on landmarks in the maxilla or the mandible, dental movement in the respective arches can be studied free of the influence of changes produced by growth displacement. Among the superimposition techniques currently being used in orthodontics are the "structural superimposition" method as described by Bjo^"ork. Through implant studies, Bjo^"ork was able to identify relatively stable landmarks in the mandible, such as the inner cortical structure of the inerior border of the symphysis, detail structures of the mandibular canal, and the lower contour of the molar germ before root development begins. By superimposing the longitudinal radiographs on the landmarks described previously so that they fit together in the best way possible, Bjo^"ork belived that the mandibular dental changes could be studied independent of displacement. When compared to best-Fit method, or Ricketts' method. Bjo^"ork's structural superimposition method using sturctural method is highly recommended. In this article, the metbods of mandibular superimposition were explained & comprisons were reviewed.
