현재 한국은 인구고령화가 급속도로 이루어지면서 인구 구조가 사회에 미치는 영향에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 그런데 이러한 인구 연령구조의 변화는 한 국가 차원에서만 문제가 되는 것이 아니라 조직 내에서도 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 하지만 그동안 조직 내에서의 연령구조에 대한 연구는 이루어지지 못하였으며, 경찰 조직과 관련해서도 계급 구조 등은 다수 논의되어 왔지만 연령구조와 관련해서는 논의된 적이 없었다. 하지만 연령구조는 조직의 특성을 보여주는 주요 특성 중 하나가 될 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 경찰조직에서 현재 경찰공무원의 연령별 구조를 개관하고, 경찰의 연령구조가 현재 어떠한 변화 추세를 보이고 있는지, 앞으로 경찰 연령구조가 어떤 식으로 변화할 것인지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 분석 결과 다음과 같은 경찰 연령구조의 특성을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, 한국 경찰의 연령구조는 그동안 피라미드형에서 다이아몬드형으로 변화되어 왔다. 둘째, 경찰의 계급 중 특히 경정 이하에서 고령화가 급속히 진행되고 있다. 그리고 계급과 연령 간 연관성이 점차 강화되고 있다. 셋째, 현재의 경찰 인사시스템이 지속될 경우 경찰의 연령구조는 고연령층과 저연령층이 많고 중간 연령층이 존재하지 않는 모래시계형 연령구조를 지니게 될 것으로 추정된다. 넷째, 이러한 경찰 연령구조는 전체 사회의 인구 구조와는 괴리되어 있다. 즉, 전체 인구 연령구조와 다른 모습을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 장기적 연령 효과를 고려하여 경찰 인력 채용 시스템을 설계할 필요가 있다는 정책적 시사점을 얻을 수 있었다. There is a growing interest in the influence of age composition to a society as Korea is rapidly becoming an aging society. The change in age composition can create influence within not just a country but also an organization. However, there have been few studies on age composition in organizations. Regarding police organizations, there have been discussions on hierarchical structure but not on age composition. The age structure can be a major attribute which shows characteristics of an organization. Therefore, this study aims to provide an overview of the age composition and to look into the current trend and outlook of changes in age structure in a police organization. The analysis result shows the following characteristics of age composition in police organizations. First, age structure of Korean police officers changed from pyramid to diamond. Second, aging is rapidly happening in the officer group lower then chief superintendents. And the relation between ranks and age is getting stronger. Third, if the current HR system remains in place, age composition in police officers is presumed to be hourglass structure. Fourth, there's a gap between the current age structure of police organizations and the one of overall society. These results implicate that the police organization needs to deploy a new hiring system considering the long term influence from aging.
