데이비드 크로넨버그 감독의 <폭력의 역사>는 미국을 배경으로 하고 있음에도 불구하고 실제 촬영은 캐나다에서 진행되었다. 이러한 지리적 차이에 착안하여, 본 논문은 특정한 지리학적 장소들과 미국의 국가주의 이데올로기, 그리고 폭력의 관계에 대하여 심도 깊은 조사를 하고자 한다. 동시대 정치에 대한 직접적인 언급을 하지 않는 영화임에도, 본 논문은 <폭력의 역사>가 9/11 사태 이후 미국 내에 팽배한 불안과 이데올로기 지배를 탐구하는 작품임을 지적한다. 이 영화는 미국 중서부의 가상의 소도시 밀브룩과 동부의 대도시 필라델피아를 정교하게 대조한다. 전자는 평화롭고 목가적인 공동체이며, 후자는 극단적인 폭력의 장소이다. 하지만 본 논문은 밀브룩 또한 폭력으로부터 자유롭지 않으며, 오히려 사회적 규범성과 폭력에 의해 그곳의 가치 체계와 외관이 지탱되고 있음을 주장한다. 프런티어 테제로부터 테러와의 전쟁에 이르기까지 폭력이 미국 역사에서 차지해 온 근본적인 위치를 고려하면서, 본 논문은 이 영화의 내러티브와 영화적 스타일이 9/11 이후 시대의 사회적 불안에 대한 성찰을 제공하는 과정을 짚어보고자 한다. David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence is an American film that was filmed in Canada. Starting from this production detail, this paper interrogates the relationship between specific geographic locations, the nationalist ideology of the United States, and violence. Although the film does not explicitly mention contemporary politics, this paper argues that A History of Violence is a film that delves into the ideology and anxiety prevailing in post-9/11 America. The film carefully makes a contrast between a fictional small town in US Midwest, Millbrook, Indiana, and an eastern metropolis, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The former is a peaceful pastoral community, and the latter is a locus of extreme violence. However, this paper indicates that Millbrook is not free from violence - its value system and outlook are supported by social normativity and violence. While considering how violence has played foundational roles in the history of the United States, from the Frontier Thesis to the Global War on Terror, this paper investigates how the film’s narrative and cinematic style offer retrospection to post-9/11 insecurity and anxiety.
