This study is on stability improvement of a Communications-Based Train Control(CBTC) system. In the current CBTC system, a train employs Break-Before-Make handover, in which a train disconnects from the previous connected Access Point(AP) and connects to the next AP while moving. In this handover procedure, the train cannot receive and transmit vital train control data. Such communication discontinuity between AP and train can undermine CBTC system stability. The objective of this study is to improve the stability of CBTC communication by alleviating the communication discontinuity problem during handover. To do so, IEEE 802.11be next generation multi-link wireless LAN, and Wi-Fi Alliance’s EasyMesh specifications, which are based on IEEE 1905, IEEE 802.11v and many other wireless LAN standards, are used. With these standards, a novel Make-Before-Break handover scheme for the CBTC system is proposed. The performance of the proposed handover scheme is rigorously evaluated using computer simulation and the results show that the proposed handover scheme outperforms the current CBTC handover scheme. It is anticipated that the proposed handover scheme will improve CBTC system performance substantially in future railway system.
