The variations of corrosion potentials and polarization behaviors affecting corrosion current density of carbon steel and stainless steel were investigated in NaCl and H₂SO₄ solution. Then corrosion potentials shifted to negative direction with submerged time in NaCl solution, corrosion current density was slightly decreased in carbon steel while was gradually increased in stainless steel. Therefore it is considered that corrosion potentials of stainless steel are determined by activation polarization of reduction reaction of dissolved oxygen, on the other hand carbon steel's corrosion potential are determined by concentration polarization of it. These two steels showed different behaviors from each other also in H₂SO₄ solution on the variations of corrosion poltentials and polarization behaviors according to concentration of H₂SO₄solution. Eventually it is suggested that in carbon steel the corrosion behavior is controlled by polarization and depolarization reaction of cathode while in stainless steel its behavior is controlled by those of anode both in NaCl and H₂SO₄ solution.
The Pitting Inhibition of Fe-Cu Alloy in Weakly Alkaline Solution under Wet-Dry Condition

Pure iron, Fe-0.4, and 1.2 wt.%Cu alloys were examined by conducting the electrochemical techniques inthe weakly alkaline solution, pH9, controlled by Ca(OH)2 solution added with 0.02M NaCl. The Rp measured fromac impedance, selected 10 kHz and 10mHz, in weakly alkaline solutions containing chloride ions indicated that theaddition of copper up to 1.2wt.% into the pure iron significantly improved the pitting resistance of iron. In contrastto alloy, the pure iron showed the rapid pitting occurencespotential of pure iron was shifted to less noble value, pitting initiation.
