The engine lubrication system is subject to external factors like acceleration /deceleration, cornering and also to the design conditions of various engine components; Crank train, Valve train, oil pan, etc. Furthermore, with constantly improving engine manufacturing technology, the latest technology such as HLA and VVT can now be applied to the valve train system, and this then requires bigger capacity of a lubrication system. However, Just increasing oil capacity, might rather cause too much air into oil pan, which could lead to oil areation. So to prevent it, proper oil drain system and optimized baffle plate design are needed. We conducted the oil sloshing analysis and oil pan visualization test to understand oil drain phenomenon. And we came up with a few specifications for the best position and size of a drain hole. Among those specifications, we chose one that it meets the standard requirements at the tilting test and we concluded the optimized design of oil baffle plate. At this research, it was surely confirmed that the process of performing oil sloshing analysis, visualizing oil movement and engine tilting test is the effective way to the design of the optimized oil supply system.
