We perform lacquer formation experiments with various combinations of marine fuel oils and lubricant oils. We also investigate the influences of base number (BN) in lubricant oil and sulfur content in fuel oil. A dissolution test with 10% dilute sulfuric acid and pull-off force test are accomplished to distinguish whether the residual layers are lacquering or not. The lacquering layers are dissolved by dilute sulfuric acid and have a strong pull-off force. Moreover, the calcium content detected in the residual layers is compared by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). More calcium is detected in the lacquer layers than in other residual layers. Distillate fuels containing low sulfur levels are more prone to lacquering when mixed with lubricant oil with a high BN. On the other hand, residual fuels with a high sulfur content do not form lacquer. We investigate the effect of mixture volume ratio. The mixture with higher fuel oil content is more prone to generate lacquer. These experiments indicate that a lubricant with an appropriate BN should be used to prevent lacquer forming on the surfaces such as cylinder liners depending on the sulfur content of fuel oil.

Diesel power plant(DPP) with the medium speed diesel engine is operated under the very severe condition in aspect of load and operating time as compared with the marine diesel generator set. So, minimized vibration level have to be insured for the more stable operation of engine and generator. The vibration of generator set mainly comes from the resonance between the rigid modes by resilient mount or distortion modes by structural stiffness and the excitation forces of engine. Then, avoidance of resonance with structural modification is generally well known. In this paper, the first order vibration in non-resonance range and local vibration modes were investigated by impact test, response /ODS(operational deflection shape) measurement and 3D finite element analysis for the additional reduction of vibration. The proposed countermeasures were actually applied and their final effects were verified through the in-situ measurement.

The failures of local structure of marine medium-speed diesel engine occurred in durability test. The vibration response of the whole engine was in an acceptance level, but the local structures were broken. ODS test and vibration measurement were carried out in order to investigate the root cause of durability problem. These tests revealed that the root cause of failures was excessive vibration by 4.5th resonance between engine body and local structure. The best solution to reduce the vibration response is to change the type of mount. After a rigid mount was replaced by a flexible mount, maximum vibration level dropped to 72%.

Designers are often perplexed with choosing a proper S-N curve for a specific welded joint although a number of organizations have already proposed many curves for different welded joints and guidelines for them. This situation becomes worse in strain measurement because the number of installing strain gauges is restricted and designers want to check more possible weak points. In this study, various fatigue design curves for welded joints are compared and applied to the fatigue strength evaluation of baseframe for marine generator set. Strain measurement has been carried out for the operating condition. Strain measuring points are determined according to the hot spot stress approach. One-point and two-point extrapolation methods are used in order to calculate the hot spot stress. S-N curves suitable for one-point and two-point extrapolation methods have been proposed for a rational design of welded joints, and applied to the fatigue strength evaluation of the baseframe using the measured data.
