A grid generation program for specific problems is introduced. The program allows users to easily generate grid system for specific geometry such as an airfoil, cylinder, wedge, flat plate, and nozzle. Generating grid system for those problems can be proceeded with minimum user inputs such as geometry-defining parameters and grid-defining parameters. By using this program learning stage for preprocessing of CFD application can be efficiently shorten and novice students can learn and acquire experience by trying out grid generation and CFD solution by themselves.

The role of the preprocessor in CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) is very important to affect the resultant accuracy of calculation. The conformity of the geometry data with the model that is to be analysed is very important before grid generation. In analysis of this part, the process of the curve fitting reduced the errors between the actual flow and the approximation of the shape. In this study, it is shown that representing the external point data with cubic spline curves can produce the interpolated curve shape that is closer to the actual shape and the resultant flow calculation accuracy improves comparing with that of the linear interpolation case.

자바 애플릿을 이용한 대화식 다중-블록 정렬격자 생성 프로그램의 개발

In this paper an interactive program for multi-block structured grid generation is described, which is developed as a Java applet which allows running on the network or on the local computer. The program has been developed for the last several years and it offers several convenient features including unstructured triangular mesh generation and quad/tri hybrid mesh generation. Recently added functionality of the program is its ability to generate multi-block structured grid system. Structured grid has a number of advantages compared to unstructured grid, including the efficiency of the grid cells, the accuracy of the calculated flow field, and the suitability for the boundary layer calculation. In this study, improving its ability to generate multi-block structured grid for general computational domain is our main concern, and many efforts have been exercised to make grid generation for multi-body configurations such as multi-element airfoils easier. To achieve this, combining a hyperbolic scheme suitable for external flows with conventional Trans-finite Interpolation method suitable for internal flows has been tried and it is found that this combination enables easier multi-block structured grid generation for complicated flow fields, such as multi-element airfoil configurations.

This paper describes our additional efforts and related mathematical theory to improve geometry-defining function of a grid generation program which was developed and frequently used for research and educational purpose as an in-house code of authors’ lab. The code is written in JAVA and it offers geometry-defining function with several geometrical entities, including circle, arc, ellipse, and NACA-series airfoils, etc. But, it does not offer geometry definition with spline-type curves. This research aims to provide the program with the functionality to define general boundary shapes with NURBS curve. Mathematical formulations related to the NURBS is described and the functionality of the improved program is demonstrated with some examples.

In the paper, a study on the analysis of the effects of trailing edge thickness on the aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil is described. In this research, modification of the formula representing NACA symmetric airfoil is studied to change the airfoil shape with different trailing edge thickness of user’s choice. According to the result of aerodynamic characteristics, as the trailing edge thickness increases the maximum lift coefficient increases while the lift-to-drag ratio decreases. In this paper flow calculation results are demonstrated and the analysis on those results and findings on the effects of non-zero thickness of trailing edge are suggested.
