This study analyzed the differences in fear elements perceived by viewers in Eastern and Western horror films. For this purpose, data from 144 Eastern and 139 Western individuals, totaling 283 participants, were used in the analysis. The results revealed that, firstly, in Eastern horror films, the fear elements most highly perceived by viewers were visual fears, such as 'the direct appearance of ghosts is scary' and 'makeup is scary', while 'the subject matter is scary' and 'background music is scary' showed relatively lower fear perception. Secondly, in Western horror films, the fear elements most highly perceived by viewers were 'the subject matter is scary' and 'the sound of screaming is scary', whereas visual elements like 'the direct appearance of ghosts' were perceived as less scary. Thirdly, the analysis of differences between groups in the fear elements perceived in Eastern and Western horror films indicated that lighting, special effects, makeup, direct ghost appearances, and events that could actually happen were perceived as more frightening in Eastern horror films, while the subject matter, story, background music, and sounds of screaming were perceived as more frightening in Western horror films. This suggests that Eastern horror films rely more on visual fear elements, while Western horror films depend more on auditory fear elements. This study is significant as it empirically analyzed the differences in fear elements perceived by viewers in Eastern and Western horror films, and it is expected to serve as a useful resource for understanding the perception of fear elements among Eastern and Western viewers in future horror film production.
